Chapter 15 - the unlisted caller

Twenty-four hours later, the storm had finally passed, leaving Manhattan gleaming under a clear autumn sky.

Marcus Blake was locked in a federal detention center without bail, facing charges of federal conspiracy, embezzlement, and attempted murder. Evelyn Cross had been stripped of her corporate board seats and taken into custody alongside twelve corrupt city officials.

The headlines across the nation read: *Billion-Dollar Viscari Trust Restored to Long-Lost Heir.*

Inside the private office of the Viscari brownstone, Lena sat in a leather armchair by the warm hearth. She was dressed in an elegant cream sweater, her bruises healing, a cup of hot tea in her hands.

Adrien walked in and placed a set of heavy brass keys on the desk before her.

"The Viscari estate in Hudson Valley is yours," Adrien said, his voice softer than anyone in New York had ever heard it. "The commercial holdings, the real estate trust—it’s all signed over to your legal name. You never have to run again, Lena. You are safe."

Lena looked up at him, a genuine smile touching her lips for the first time. "Thank you, Uncle Adrien. For not pulling the trigger twenty years ago. And for catching me when I fell."

Adrien nodded slowly, a rare warmth in his eyes. "Family protects family."

Marco knocked gently on the doorframe, holding a small wooden box wrapped in faded velvet. "Boss. Federal agents found this in Evelyn’s private penthouse safe during the raid. It belongs to Lena."

Lena took the box and carefully opened the brass clasp.

Inside lay Elena’s original personal diary, its leather cover worn from years of use. Lena ran her fingers over her mother’s handwriting, feeling a profound sense of closure wash over her soul.

The nightmare was finally over. Marcus was destroyed. Her mother’s name was cleared.

Lena turned to the very last page of the diary.

Attached to the inner lining was a photograph that made Lena’s entire body freeze.

It was a Polaroid photo of a bustling outdoor café in Rome. At the corner table sat Elena Viscari, looking healthy, beautiful, and barely fifty years old.

In her hand was an Italian newspaper.

The date on the front page of the newspaper was clearly visible: *Three months ago.*

Lena’s breath stopped. "Adrien... look at this."

Adrien leaned down, looking at the fresh photograph. The color drained from his face. His sister was alive.

At that exact second, the antique black rotary phone on Adrien’s desk began to ring.

It was an unlisted landline. A private, hardwired frequency that had remained dead for fifteen years—a line that had belonged exclusively to his late father, Antonio Viscari.

Adrien stared at the vibrating receiver. Marco drew his sidearm instinctively.

Adrien slowly reached out and lifted the heavy receiver to his ear. "Speak."

A woman’s calm, familiar voice whispered through the static:

"Adrien. Marcus was only the bait. Hang up the phone and don't turn around."
