Chapter 14 - the fall of the serpent

Gunfire erupted inside the vault, but Adrien had already anticipated the command.
He lunged forward, grabbing the nearest guard's wrist, redirecting the first shot into the ceiling tiles, and disarming him in a single fluid motion. Marco tackled the second guard to the marble floor, neutralizing him with brutal efficiency.
Marcus fired wildly at Lena, but the bullet sparked harmlessly against the reinforced steel vault door as Lena dropped behind the safety partition.
Adrien advanced like an unstoppable shadow through the ricocheting chaos. Marcus panicked, his hands shaking as he tried to reload his magazine.
Adrien closed the distance in two strides. He seized Marcus by the throat, slamming him violently against the row of safe deposit boxes. Marcus’s gun clattered across the floor.
"Please... Adrien, wait!" Marcus gasped, his face turning purple under Adrien’s crushing grip. "I was just following Evelyn’s orders! She owns everything!"
Adrien looked into Marcus’s terrified eyes, his voice a low, terrifying growl. "You put your hands on my niece. You made her run barefoot in the rain. There is no corner of this earth where you are safe."
Adrien struck Marcus once with pinpoint precision across the jaw, knocking him completely unconscious onto the vault floor.
Behind them, the vault alarm wailed.
Evelyn backed away toward the security gates, her hands trembling as sirens wailed outside on Wall Street.
Marco stepped into her path, his gun leveled at her chest. "Going somewhere, Mrs. Cross?"
Dozens of armed federal agents burst into the bank lobby above, led by a tall, silver-haired man in a dark trench coat with a federal badge pinned to his chest.
Lena stepped out of the vault, looking up at the man descending the stairs.

The man stopped, staring down at Lena with tears welling in his aged eyes. "Elena...?"
"Her name is Lena," Adrien called out from the vault threshold, his hand resting protectively on Lena’s shoulder. "And she’s home, Vance."
