Chapter 6 - The Broken Covenant

Emergency red backup lamps instantly clicked on along the baseboards of the executive suite, casting long, dramatic blood-colored shadows across the dark wood paneling and bookshelves.

"Inbound!" Marcus roared from the main office, drawing his weapon and kicking the heavy mahogany desk on its side to form a barricade. "They cut the primary power grid!"

The remaining four associates immediately took tactical positions around the room, aiming their suppressed weapons toward the heavy double doors and the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the balcony.

Inside the sanctuary, Vincent grabbed a heavy tactical vest from the wall rack, slinging it over his dark suit jacket. He reached into a drawer, pulled out a compact suppressed pistol, and handed a small, high-tech tracking bracelet to Elena.

"Put this on the boy’s wrist, Elena," Vincent ordered, his voice sharp, calm, and absolute. "If we get separated in the stairwell, my private security team will track his position to the millimeter."

Elena’s hands trembled violently as she snapped the soft black band around Noah’s tiny wrist. Noah looked up at his mother, hugging his stuffed rabbit close. "Mommy... why are the lights red?"

"It's just a game, sweetie," Elena whispered through her tears, kissing his forehead. "Just a game."

Suddenly, a deafening explosion shattered the floor-to-ceiling glass windows along the balcony. Glass shards rained down onto the Persian rug like a shower of diamonds as four figures dressed in high-grade black tactical gear swung into the room on rappelling lines, their assault rifles flashing in the darkness.

Automatic gunfire erupted through the executive suite.

Marcus and the associates returned fire with lethal precision. Muzzle flashes illuminated the dark room in rapid, blinding bursts. The heavy smell of gunpowder and cordite instantly filled the air.

Vincent stepped out of the sanctuary, raising his pistol and firing three controlled shots into the lead intruder, dropping him instantly to the floor.

"Move to the subterranean exit!" Vincent shouted over the roar of gunfire. "Julian, cover the rear corridor!"

Julian nodded, firing a burst toward the balcony, but as he backed up toward the secret sanctuary door, his eyes locked onto Elena holding Noah. A dark, greedy expression flickered across Julian's fair face.

He didn't fire at the tactical intruders. Instead, Julian suddenly swung the barrel of his weapon toward Marcus, firing two rapid shots into Marcus's tactical vest.

Marcus let out a grunt of pain, collapsing against the overturned mahogany desk as blood welled up on his white shirt.

"Julian!" Vincent roared, turning his weapon toward his associate.

Julian grabbed Elena roughly by her arm, ripping her away from the sanctuary door, and slammed a heavy steel security shutter down over the exit control panel.

"It's over, Vincent!" Julian yelled over the chaos, his face flushed with greed as he pulled a small portable biometric scanner from his vest. "Chicago offered fifty million for the kid! I'm taking my payout!"

Before Vincent could clear his shot through the smoke, one of the dropped tactical radios on the floor crackled to life, a sharp, authoritative voice echoing through the speaker: "Team One, report! Have you secured the Caruso heir? Over."

Vincent’s dark eyes widened in shock as he recognized the voice on the radio. It belonged to Agent Thomas Vance—the chief of the regional Federal Organized Crime Task Force, proving that the federal government and the rival syndicate were working under a joint shadow operation.
