Chapter 1 - check your pocket

The grand entrance hall of the Marquetti estate was a monument to absolute power. Soaring marble pillars stretched up toward crystal chandeliers, casting warm light across polished mahogany floors. At the center of it all stood Theodore Marquetti. In his late nineties, he commanded the room without uttering a single word. Tall, broad-shouldered, and ruggedly handsome, he radiated a frightening calm that made grown men tremble. Subtle gray brushed the dark hair at his temples, framing a face marked by light stubble and eyes that saw straight through pretense. Dressed in a flawlessly tailored black suit, crisp white dress shirt, dark tie, luxury wristwatch, and polished leather shoes, he was a man who owned every inch of his world.

A few yards away, Marisol Vega moved briskly with a stack of freshly folded white linens in her arms. At thirty-two, Marisol was a beautiful, hardworking woman whose long light-brown hair was tied neatly back. Her black-and-white maid uniform was pristine, but her posture was taut with constant anxiety. Working inside the Marquetti mansion meant living on a knife's edge; she was terrified of making a single mistake that could cost her her job—or worse.

Her eyes suddenly widened in horror as she noticed her two-year-old daughter, Coraline.

Tiny, curious, and unusually observant, Coraline had wandered away from the hallway alcove. Dressed in an elegant pale-pink dress with matching small flats and a pale-pink ribbon accentuating her soft light-brown hair, her skin was fair and rosy. While most adults froze in Theodore's presence, the little girl trotted right up to the feared Mafia boss with absolute fearless composure.

Marisol nearly dropped the linens, her breath catching in her throat as Coraline reached out a small hand and tugged firmly on the hem of Theodore’s custom jacket.

Theodore paused. He slowly looked down, his intimidating gaze settling on the tiny child standing at his leather shoes. Marisol squeezed her eyes shut, expecting a thunderous reprimand.

Instead, Coraline looked straight up into Theodore's piercing eyes and offered a serious whisper.

"Check your pocket, sir."

Theodore’s dark brows furrowed slightly. He stared down at the toddler for a quiet second before reaching inside the inner lining of his tailored jacket. His hand brushed against cold metal—something that had not been there five minutes ago. He pulled it out into the warm light of the foyer.

It was an old gold ring, worn at the edges but heavy with solid craft. Theodore flipped it over in his palm, and his breath hitched. Engraved inside the band were three distinct initials: J.A.M.

His frighteningly calm exterior shattered in an instant. His chest rose and fell sharply as a ghost from his past seemed to grip his throat. His sharp eyes darted from the gold band straight to the little girl standing calmly before him.
