Chapter 8 - eyes in the dark

Theodore descended the narrow stone steps, flashlight cutting through the thick darkness. The air grew colder, rich with the damp scent of earth and concrete.
At the bottom of the stairs lay a hidden subterranean bunker, expertly built into the foundation of the old estate. Theodore swept his light across the room, expecting an ambush.
Instead, he found a living space.
A simple cot sat in the corner, neatly made with heavy woolen blankets. A wooden table was covered with blueprints of the Marquetti mansion, surveillance monitors showing live feeds of every hallway—including the main entrance hall—and dozens of files detailed with the names of every lieutenant in the Marquetti syndicate.
Dominic’s file was at the top, covered in red ink marks detailing embezzled funds, secret meetings with rival families, and a planned assassination set for midnight tonight.

Julian had been protecting Theodore from the dark. He had lived in the shadows for decades, keeping watch over his younger brother while staying hidden from the enemies who had tried to wipe out their bloodline years ago.
Theodore stepped closer to the desk. Sitting beside an open journal was a worn photo frame. Inside was a picture of Theodore and Julian as young boys, smiling arm-in-arm on the estate lawns.
