Chapter 4 - whispers in the study

Theodore reached his arm deep into the dark recess. His fingers brushed against something hard and metallic—a small, heavy lockbox coated in a fine layer of dust. He pulled it out carefully and placed it on top of a nearby storage crate.

On the lid of the box was an emblem: a crested lion wrapping its paws around a sword. It was the original coat of arms of the Marquetti family—a symbol that had not been used since Theodore's father passed away twenty-five years ago.

Marisol stood near the doorway, her hands clasped tightly over her maid uniform, her eyes wide with terror. "Mr. Marquetti... I swear on my life, I had no idea she was playing in here. I keep a close eye on her, but she's so fast—"

"Quiet, Marisol," Theodore said smoothly, his tone remarkably calm yet absolute. He didn't look back at her; his focus was entirely on the lockbox. "Bring her to my study. Both of you."

Minutes later, the heavy mahogany doors of Theodore's private study clicked shut. The room was grand, lined with floor-to-ceiling leather-bound books and dominated by a massive executive desk.

Theodore sat in his dark leather chair, resting the old gold ring beside the dusty lockbox. Coraline sat quietly on the thick Persian rug near the desk, playing gently with the pale-pink ribbon in her hair, utterly unbothered by the grand tension in the room.

"Where did Coraline find that ring, Marisol?" Theodore asked, leaning forward, resting his chin on his hands. "This ring belonged to my older brother, Julian. He died when I was twelve years old. The wall panel she pointed out was built by my father before the mansion was renovated. No living person knows about that mechanism."

Marisol felt her knees turn to water. "I... I don't know, sir! Coraline doesn't talk much, but she wanders toward the west wing when I'm cleaning the lower guest rooms. I thought she was just looking at the paintings!"

Theodore looked down at the tiny girl. "Coraline. Who gave you the ring?"

Coraline paused her playing, looking up with big, bright eyes. "The man in the wall."
