Chapter 1

The magnificent Chicago charity gala was a cinematic display of immense wealth and power. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over the sprawling ballroom, illuminating towering floral arrangements and the elegant formal eveningwear of the city's elite. Classical music drifted through the air, masking the heavy, invisible tension that always accompanied the presence of the city's most feared Mafia boss.
Luca Moretti stood behind a small, custom-made pink wheelchair near the edge of the dance floor. He was a man of terrifying, commanding presence. Tall, muscular, and exceptionally handsome, Luca wore an expensive tailored black suit and a black dress shirt left slightly open at the collar, revealing faint glimpses of the dark tattoos inked across his chest. His thick dark brown hair was swept back flawlessly, and his piercing, intense eyes scanned the perimeter of the room with predatory alertness. Despite the cold exterior and the lethal enforcers flanking him, Luca’s heart was entirely anchored to the fragile little girl sitting in front of him.
Three-year-old Sophia Moretti was breathtakingly adorable. She wore a beautiful pale-yellow floral party dress with layered ruffles, pristine white socks, and tiny pale-yellow shoes. A matching yellow ribbon held back her long, curly golden-brown hair. Her rosy cheeks and bright, innocent eyes contrasted sharply with the dark, violent world her father ruled. For three agonizing years, Sophia had been entirely unable to walk, bound to her pink wheelchair by a trauma Luca could not erase.
From the service corridor, Hannah Carter emerged. The thirty-two-year-old plus-sized waitress moved with a gentle, nurturing grace that immediately set her apart from the cold elegance of the gala. She wore a mint-green service dress with delicate white lace trim, a crisp white apron, and a maid-style headpiece resting perfectly atop her soft blonde-brown hair, which was pinned into a neat bun.
Hannah carried a silver tray lined with crystal glasses. She navigated the crowded floor, keeping her warm face calm and professional. As she approached the VIP section, her eyes landed on the little girl in the pink wheelchair.
Hannah froze mid-step. Her expressive eyes widened in sudden, absolute shock.
"Excuse me," a wealthy guest muttered, bumping Hannah’s shoulder.
Hannah barely noticed. Her hands trembled slightly as she forced her legs to carry her forward. She approached the wheelchair and slowly crouched down until she was eye-level with the little girl, entirely ignoring the terrifying Mafia boss standing just inches away.
"Apple juice again, sweetheart?" Hannah whispered, her gentle smile fracturing as her voice trembled heavily with suppressed emotion.
Sophia blinked, her bright eyes locking onto Hannah’s warm, tear-filled face. The little girl’s rosy cheeks flushed with sudden, overwhelming recognition and pure excitement.
"Hannah?" Sophia gasped softly.
Before Luca could intervene, Sophia gripped the padded sides of her pink wheelchair. Her knuckles turned white. With a sharp intake of breath, the fragile three-year-old suddenly pushed her entire body upward.

"Sophia, wait!" Luca shouted, his deep voice slicing through the polite murmur of the ballroom.
Guests nearby turned, their wine glasses halting halfway to their lips. A collective, stunned gasp rippled across the marble floor. Luca whipped around in total, paralyzing shock. His sharp masculine jawline went slack. Before his very eyes, his beloved daughter was standing on her own two trembling legs for the very first time in three years. Her tiny knees shook violently under the layered ruffles of her yellow dress, but she did not fall. Her bright eyes were locked entirely on the plus-sized waitress kneeling across the marble.
