Chapter 2

"Sophia!" Luca cried out, his voice cracking with a raw, desperate emotion that the Chicago underworld had never witnessed. He took a frantic, urgent step forward, his polished black dress shoes echoing sharply against the marble.
One of Luca’s elite bodyguards, reacting strictly on instinct, lunged forward to catch the trembling child.
"Don't touch her!" Luca roared, but Sophia was faster.
With surprising ferocity, the tiny three-year-old angrily pushed the towering bodyguard’s massive hand away. She swayed dangerously, her pale-yellow shoes sliding slightly on the polished floor. The entire ballroom fell into a dead, suffocating silence. The orchestra abruptly stopped playing, the conductor lowering his baton in sheer disbelief as hundreds of wealthy guests stared at the impossible scene.
Sophia took one wobbly, terrifying step forward. Then another.
"Hannah!" Sophia cried out joyfully, her sweet, high-pitched voice shattering the silence.
Suddenly, the little girl broke into a clumsy, desperate run. She moved across the open marble floor, her long curly golden-brown hair bouncing wildly behind her. Luca reached out his heavily tattooed arms, his piercing eyes wide with stunned disbelief, but Sophia ran right past her father, completely focused on the waitress.
Hannah turned ghostly pale. The silver tray slipped from her trembling hands, crashing onto the marble floor with a deafening, metallic clatter. Crystal glasses shattered, sending a wave of golden apple juice splashing across the white lace trim of her mint-green dress.
Hannah didn't care. She dropped heavily to her knees, abandoning all professional decorum, just as Sophia threw herself violently into her open arms.
"You kept your promise!" Sophia sobbed with pure, unadulterated joy, burying her rosy face into Hannah’s neck and hugging the waitress tightly.
Hannah clutched the fragile little girl against her chest, her soft blonde-brown bun coming loose as she buried her face in Sophia’s curls. Both of them began sobbing uncontrollably right in the middle of the luxurious charity gala.
"I'm here, my sweet girl," Hannah wept, rocking Sophia back and forth. "I'm right here. You're so big now. You're so incredibly brave."
Luca stormed toward them, two heavily armed bodyguards trailing tightly behind him. The shock of his daughter’s miracle was rapidly being swallowed by a dark, terrifying confusion and rising dread. He stopped mere inches away, his towering, muscular frame casting a long shadow over the kneeling woman.
He stared at Hannah as she held Sophia with a fierce, maternal protectiveness. Then, Luca noticed the look in Hannah’s expressive, tearful eyes as she glanced up at him. It wasn't just fear of a Mafia boss. It was a deep, buried recognition—a horrifying secret that chilled Luca’s blood instantly.
"Who are you?" Luca demanded, his voice low, cold, and vibrating with controlled, lethal fury.

Hannah remained kneeling in the spilled juice, clutching Sophia tightly. The ballroom was completely silent, every guest holding their breath. Hannah’s lips trembled violently as she gathered the courage to speak, her warm face reflecting a mixture of profound guilt and absolute terror.
"I was there," Hannah whispered, her voice shattered and barely audible. "I was there the night they tried to kill her."
