Chapter 9

The heavy engine of the armored SUV roared to life, vibrating with immense, suppressed power. Luca threw the vehicle into gear and slammed his foot on the accelerator. The massive black SUV surged up the exit ramp, its reinforced steel bumper smashing violently through the closed wooden security gate, splintering it into a thousand pieces as they burst out into the dark, rain-soaked streets of Chicago.

Heavy, cinematic rain lashed against the ballistic glass, the wipers working furiously to clear the view. The neon lights of the city blurred through the downpour, casting colorful, distorted reflections across Luca’s sharp masculine jawline.

In the backseat, the ambient luxury lighting glowed softly. Hannah let out a long, shuddering breath, her plus-sized frame finally relaxing against the plush leather. She looked down at Sophia, who was resting her head against the white lace trim of Hannah’s apron. The little girl in the pale-yellow floral dress reached up, her tiny fingers gently tracing the tears on Hannah’s warm, rosy cheeks.

"Don't cry, Hannah," Sophia whispered sweetly. "Daddy fixed it. We're safe now."

Hannah managed a weak, emotional smile, kissing the girl’s curly golden-brown hair. "I know, sweetheart. I'm just so happy I found you."

Luca glanced up at the rearview mirror, his piercing, intense eyes softening as he watched the beautiful, nurturing interaction. "Are you hurt, Hannah? Did any of the ricochets hit you?"

"No, Luca," Hannah replied, using his first name naturally now. "We're okay. Where are we going?"

"To my private safehouse on the north shore," Luca explained, his deep voice projecting absolute confidence. "It’s off the books. Not even Marcus knew about it. It’s a fortress. We will stay there until I wipe the Falcone syndicate off the map."

Before Hannah could respond, the encrypted satellite phone mounted on the SUV’s dashboard began to ring. The shrill sound cut through the quiet cabin like a knife. The caller ID glowed ominously, displaying a blocked, untraceable number.

Luca’s expression instantly turned cold. He pressed the speaker button. "Speak."

"Luca Moretti," a smooth, arrogant voice echoed through the speakers. It was Victor Falcone, the ruthless head of the rival syndicate. "I hear there was quite a mess in the sub-basement of the gala tonight. My condolences on the loss of your security chief. Marcus was expensive, but ultimately, incompetent."

Hannah stiffened, her expressive eyes wide with renewed fear. She pulled Sophia closer.

"Marcus is currently bleeding out on the concrete, Victor," Luca replied, his voice a lethal, vibrating threat. "And if your men are still in the building, they are already dead. You failed."

"Did I?" Victor chuckled darkly. "I know you have the waitress in the car, Luca. I know she saw Marcus open the door three years ago. You may have survived tonight, but you can't run forever. The entire city is looking for that black SUV."

"Let them look," Luca stated, his thick dark brown hair catching the faint dashboard light. "You made a critical error tonight, Victor. You reminded me why I became a monster in the first place."

"Big words for a man running away," Victor taunted.

"I'm not running," Luca whispered, his tone dropping to a terrifying, deadly calm. "My daughter walked tonight, Victor. She is healing. And because she no longer needs me to carry her, both of my hands are free. I am going to tear your empire apart brick by brick, and I am going to start with you."

Luca violently slammed his hand against the console, cutting the connection. He gripped the steering wheel, his dark tattoos flexing, and steered the heavy SUV into the dark, rain-swept highway heading north, taking his family toward the safehouse, unaware of the horror waiting for them there.
