Chapter 16 - Simone’s Surgery

The cardiac surgery happened eleven weeks after the birthday.

Simone could have delayed.

Her doctors advised against unnecessary postponement.

The criminal case did not change her medical needs.

Nathan took primary care of Iris starting three days before surgery.

Not because he won.

Because that was the temporary order and practical plan.

Simone entered the hospital without the Morello documents she once treated as essential.

Vivienne asked whether she should visit.

I said:

“Do you want to?”

“Yes.”

“Then ask through counsel whether Simone wants you there.”

She did.

Simone said no.

Vivienne respected it.

The surgery lasted just under four hours.

Valve repair successful.

No stroke.

No major complication.

ICU one night.

Hospital four days.

Recovery at home afterward.

I learned the outcome from Nathan because Iris wanted Callie to know her mother was okay.

Callie drew a card.

Then stopped before writing Simone’s name.

“Do I send?”

“You choose.”

She decided:

“For Iris.”

The card said:

I’m glad your mom is okay.

Not:

Dear Simone.

Not forgiveness.

Compassion directed toward her friend.

Iris kept it.

Simone never saw it.

That was fine.

During recovery, Simone had to accept help.

Nurses.

Physical restrictions.

Nathan transporting Iris.

A neighbor bringing meals.

Her sister from California staying one week.

Not Vivienne.

That mattered psychologically.

The world did not collapse because the Marcellis were not the backup plan.

Nathan handled school.

Homework.

Soccer.

Medication? Iris had allergy medication, simple.

He was late once.

Forgot a library book.

Made terrible pancakes.

Normal parenting flaws.

Iris remained safe.

The contingency Simone feared most—

being unavailable while Nathan parented—

happened.

And he did it.

Fear finally met updated evidence.
