Chapter 17 - The Message Simone Never Sent

During discovery in the custody case, a draft email appeared from Simone’s account.
Never sent.
Addressed to Vivienne.
Written three weeks before the birthday.
Subject line:
I need you to understand.
The draft said:
If anything happens to me, I cannot let Nathan become the only person defining Iris’s life.
Then:
You and Enzo can give her the stability he never could.
Then the sentence:
Callie will adjust. Children adjust when adults stop treating their first reaction as law.
Vivienne cried when she read it.
“I never saw this.”
I believed her.
The draft continued:
Iris already thinks of your home as hers in an emergency. I need Enzo committed before surgery because once he says yes he will not abandon a child.
That explained why Simone wanted Vivienne to delay telling me until she could present the situation personally.
She believed my protective instincts could be recruited.
Place Iris in front of me.
Tell me she needed safety.
Make saying no feel cruel.
The plan was not illegal coercion.
It was emotional engineering.
Simone knew me.
I protect children.
She intended to make that trait part of the decision.
Then came:
Callie is the only unpredictable piece because she is used to being the center of Enzo’s world.
I stopped reading.
A seven-year-old described as:
the unpredictable piece.
That was what Callie had sensed.
Simone did not need her dead.
Did not plan to injure her.
But she had already reduced Callie from child to obstacle inside a family transition plan.
That mental move made the shove easier.
Once another person becomes an obstacle, harshness begins to feel logistical.

That is how adults become dangerous while telling themselves they are solving problems.
