Chapter 1 - The Gilded Mirage

The grand ballroom of the Valenti estate burned with the artificial sun of three thousand crystal chandeliers. Baccarat glass clinked against vintage champagne bottles, and the heavy aroma of Cuban cigars mixed with expensive French perfumes. Hundreds of high-society figures, corrupt politicians, and underworld elites moved across the polished oak floor, all gathered to pay homage to the king of the syndicate.

Dominic Valenti stood on the mezzanine overlook, towering over the crowd. Built like a mountain sculpted from granite, he adjusted the cuff of his tailored black tuxedo, the subtle gleam of his platinum luxury wristwatch catching the golden light. At fifty, Dominic was a battle-hardened legend—a man whose silence carried more terror than another man’s gunshot. His dark eyes, steady and terrifyingly calm, scanned the room. Beside him, his seven-year-old daughter, Maisie, held his hand tightly. She was a vision of pure innocence amidst a sea of predators, dressed in an elegant pale-pink party dress, a soft cream cardigan, and velvet flats.

"Are you warm enough, sweetheart?" Dominic asked, his deep, gravelly voice softening to a tender murmur that only she could hear.

"I'm okay, Daddy," Maisie said, offering a small, sweet smile. "Can we see the ice sculptures later?"

"Anything you want, printable princess," Dominic replied gently, pressing his large, callous palm against her small back.

From the edge of the grand staircase, Lucinda Valenti watched them with eyes cold enough to freeze fire. At forty, Dominic’s sister-in-law was the picture of glamorous malice. Draped in a figure-hugging emerald evening gown that draped around her frame like snake scales, she dripped with diamond bracelets and cascading chandelier earrings. She swirled her champagne, her red lips curved into a sharp, calculating sneer. To the world, Lucinda was the mourning, elegant widow of Dominic’s late brother. To those who knew the inner workings of the empire, she was a venomous opportunist waiting for the slightest sign of weakness.

As a delegation of international weapons brokers approached Dominic, he patted Maisie’s shoulder. "Stay right here with Marcus," Dominic ordered softly, nodding to his chief bodyguard, a burly man standing two steps behind. "Daddy has to speak with these gentlemen for five minutes."

Maisie nodded obediently. But as Dominic stepped away, Lucinda glided forward, her heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor.

"Marcus," Lucinda purred, her voice dripping with artificial warmth. "Dominic needs you in the study immediately. A urgent call from Chicago. I’ll watch the child."

Marcus hesitated, knowing the strict protocols. "Ma'am, Mr. Valenti instructed—"

"I am a Valenti, Marcus," Lucinda interrupted, her icy gaze piercing through him. "Are you implying I cannot safeguard my own niece for three minutes? Go. Now. Or I will have Dominic replace you before midnight."

Pressured by her aristocratic authority, Marcus bowed his head slightly and hurried toward the study corridor. The moment he disappeared around the corner, Lucinda’s warm smile evaporated into pure venom. She grabbed Maisie roughly by the wrist, her manicured nails digging into the girl's soft skin.

"Come with me, little rat," Lucinda hissed under her breath.

"Aunt Lucinda, you're hurting me!" Maisie whimpered, her eyes welling with tears as she was dragged down a dimly lit service hallway away from the noise of the ballroom.
