Chapter 10 - The Dawn of the Empire

By six o'clock the next morning, the first rays of the golden sun began to filter through the massive stained-glass windows of the Valenti estate. The smell of fresh varnish and cut oak filled the air. A team of master carpenters had worked through the night, completely replacing the floorboards in both the parlor and the ballroom. The hidden chambers were filled with solid poured concrete, forever sealing the dark history beneath feet of unyielding stone.

In the sunlit breakfast room on the top floor, Dominic sat at the head of a massive oak table. He had changed out of his tuxedo into a simple, perfectly fitted black silk shirt and dark trousers. His luxury watch gleamed under the morning light.

Across from him sat Julianna, cleaned, dressed in a warm cashmere sweater, her eyes slowly regaining their strength and life as she ate a quiet meal. Next to her sat Maisie, happily spreading strawberry jam over a slice of toast.

Dominic watched them in silence, taking a slow sip of black coffee. The terror of the previous night had been washed away by the light of the new day. The traitors had been purged, the secrets laid bare, and his family restored to wholeness.

Maisie looked up from her plate, her rosy cheeks glowing in the morning sun. "Daddy?"

"Yes, my sweet?" Dominic replied, his harsh features softening completely.

"Is Auntie Julianna going to live with us now?"

Dominic looked at his sister, who offered a tired, deeply grateful smile.

"Yes, Maisie," Dominic said, his deep voice filled with undeniable authority and protection. "Aunt Julianna is staying home. This house is safe now. Solid from the bottom all the way to the roof."

Maisie smiled brightly, taking a bite of her toast. Dominic leaned back in his chair, gazing out over his vast, sun-drenched estate. The crown of the Valenti empire was heavy, bathed in blood and iron, but as long as he stood guard, no dark shadow would ever rise from beneath the floor again.
