Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Web

A collective gasp echoed through the room as Julianna’s face became visible to the senior members of the Valenti syndicate. Men who had served the family for thirty years looked on in absolute horror.
"She's... she's alive?" Frank stammered, raising his gun instinctively, not knowing who to point it at.
Lucinda chuckled—a cold, sharp sound that cut through the horror. "She was never dead, Dominic. My husband knew that if Julianna inherited her share of the family's Swiss accounts, we would be left with scraps. So we made her disappear. And when my husband died, I kept her. A little insurance policy against you."
Lucinda stepped forward, her heels crunching on the shattered glass of the flower vases.
"You see, Dominic, if I die, or if I am arrested, my attorneys automatically release the video confessions Julianna signed under... persuasive circumstances. Confessions that detail how you ordered the hit on rival families, how you laundered government funds. The FBI will seize every dime of the Valenti fortune before sunrise."
Dominic gently reached into the cellar pit, his massive hands incredibly soft as he wrapped them around his sister’s fragile wrists. With effortless strength, he lifted Julianna out of the pit and laid her gently on a velvet couch nearby. He stripped off his tailored tuxedo jacket and draped it over her shivering shoulders.
Julianna looked up at her brother, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. "Dominic... she... she kept me in the dark... for years..."
Dominic kissed his sister’s crown. "It's over now, Julianna. I've got you."
He stood up slowly, turning back to face Lucinda. The calm that had defined Dominic Valenti his entire life had returned, but it was no longer the calm of a businessman. It was the absolute, unyielding stillness of executioner.
"You thought money and federal threats would protect you from me?" Dominic asked softly, stepping closer to Lucinda.
Lucinda’s smile wavered slightly under the sheer weight of his aura, but she stood her ground. "I have five legal firms in New York ready to press send on those files, Dominic. You touch me, and the Valenti empire crumbles."
Dominic reached into his vest pocket, pulled out his phone, and pressed a single speed-dial button. He put the phone on speaker.
A smooth, precise voice came through the speaker: "Mr. Valenti. The five law firms in Manhattan, Zurich, and London have been neutralized. All servers seized. All attorneys in custody. Your account transfer of thirty million dollars to their board of directors was... very persuasive."

Lucinda’s face drained of all color. The arrogance that had sustained her for years vanished in an instant, replaced by sheer, naked panic. "No... that's impossible! They were loyal to my husband!"
"Everyone has a price, Lucinda," Dominic said coldly. "And yours just ran out."
