Chapter 5 - The Maid's Burden

The sunlit peace of the living room shattered in an instant. The emergency backup lanterns flickered on along the baseboards as the main power grid was suddenly severed from the outside.
Dante burst back into the room, his face pale and covered in sweat, holding a tactical submachine gun. "Boss! Marcus compromised the perimeter gates! He let three armored vans belonging to the Falcone syndicate onto the lower driveway! They're pushing toward the main entrance!"
The remaining guards in the room immediately took defensive positions near the tall arched windows, drawing their suppressed sidearms.
Elena gasped in terror, rushing forward and scooping Sophia into her arms, clutching her daughter tight against her chest. Sophia buried her face into her mother's shoulder, holding her teddy bear tightly, while Titan stood up, his ears pinning back as his low, terrifying growl returned with violent intensity.
Adrian did not panic. The shock of discovering his brother's daughter had transformed into an absolute, lethal rage. He unbuttoned his suit jacket, reaching into his shoulder holster to pull a custom heavy sidearm.
"Dante," Adrian commanded, his deep voice carrying over the blaring security horns. "Take Elena and Sophia to the panic room behind my private study. Lock the blast doors."
"No!" Elena cried out, tears streaming down her face. "Mr. Moretti... Adrian... please! Don't let them take her!"
Adrian stepped up to Elena, placing a large, warm hand on her shoulder. His dark eyes met hers with unyielding, absolute conviction. "Nobody touches my brother's child while I am breathing, Elena. Go with Dante."
Sophia peeked over her mother's shoulder, reaching out her small hand toward Adrian. "Uncle Adrian... take Mr. Snuggles. He keeps the bad men away."
She extended her fluffy brown teddy bear toward him.
Adrian looked at the simple child's toy, then down at the little girl's sweet, trusting face. A subtle, genuine smile touched his bearded face—a smile his men had not seen in six years. He reached out and took the small teddy bear, tucking it carefully into his inner suit pocket over his heart.
"I'll keep him safe, little one," Adrian whispered softly. "Now go."

Titan let out a sharp bark, stepping between Elena and the doorway, acting as an impenetrable wall of muscle as Dante escorted the mother and child down the quiet corridor toward the subterranean sanctuary.
Adrian turned back toward the tall windows of the living room, racking the slide of his heavy pistol with a crisp, lethal click as the sound of approaching automatic gunfire echoed through the courtyard outside.
