Chapter 7 - The Poisoner's Shadow

Ten minutes later, the heavy blast doors of the subterranean panic room disengaged with a deep mechanical hiss.
Elena and Sophia stepped out into the hallway, guarded by Dante. The moment Sophia saw Adrian standing near the entrance of the sunlit living room, her face lit up with radiant joy.
"Uncle Adrian!" she called out, her little shoes clicking against the hardwood floor as she ran toward him.
Adrian dropped to one knee, throwing his broad arms open. Sophia ran straight into his embrace, wrapping her small arms around his neck. Adrian lifted her effortlessly into his arms, pulling her flush against his broad chest, holding her tight as if she were the most precious treasure in the world.
Titan walked up beside them, wagging his heavy tail and nudging his snout against Sophia’s pink dress.
Elena walked over slowly, tears of relief streaming down her fair rosy cheeks. "Is it over?"
"The estate is secure, Elena," Adrian said softly, reaching into his suit coat and pulling out the fluffy brown teddy bear. He handed it back to Sophia. "Mr. Snuggles did his job. He kept me safe."
Sophia giggled, clutching her teddy bear close and kissing Adrian’s bearded cheek. "I told you he was a good boy!"
Dante walked up to Adrian, bowing his head in deep respect. "Boss, the perimeter is completely locked down. Federal authorities are handling the road outside, but Don Falcone is currently hiding in his heavily fortified estate in the northern hills."
Adrian stood up to his full height, holding Sophia securely against his hip. His soft, tender expression instantly vanished, replaced by the terrifying, cold resolve of a mafia king preparing for absolute war.
"Dante," Adrian commanded flatly. "Assemble the entire Moretti vanguard. Every captain, every lieutenant, every soldier. We march on the Falcone estate at sunset."
Elena gasped softly. "Adrian... please be careful. Falcone has dozens of mercenaries."

Adrian looked at Elena, his dark eyes steady and unyielding. "Falcone tried to kill my family, Elena. He tried to murder my brother's daughter. By midnight tonight, the Falcone name will cease to exist in this city."
He looked down at Sophia, gently smoothing a stray lock of brown hair behind her ear. "You and Sophia will stay in the master suite under heavy guard. When I return, this city will belong to her."
