Chapter 1

The heavy Chicago rain lashed violently against the floor-to-ceiling reinforced glass of the ultra-luxury mansion, the torrential downpour illuminated by the sudden, jagged flashes of lightning. Inside the colossal estate, however, the atmosphere was completely controlled, dictated entirely by the man who owned it. The enormous marble hallway gleamed under the warm, golden light of the cascading crystal chandeliers. It was a space designed to intimidate, a grand corridor that led directly from the shadowed, forbidden depths of the West Wing to the sweeping grand staircase.
Adrien Moretti stepped out of the darkness of the West Wing. At forty-two, he was the undisputed, feared king of the Chicago mafia, and he looked every inch the part. He was exceptionally handsome, tall, and heavily muscular, his broad shoulders filling out an immaculate, tailored black three-piece suit. His thick dark hair was perfectly styled, and a short, neatly trimmed beard framed a sharp jawline. But it was his intense, storm-gray eyes that made men tremble. Tonight, those eyes were cold, hollowed by a profound, dangerous exhaustion.
As his polished leather shoes struck the marble floor, the sound echoed like gunshots. Instantly, the mansion’s staff reacted.
"He is coming. Eyes down," the head butler, an older man named Thomas, hissed sharply to the younger staff members.
Every servant in the hallway—the housekeeper, two valets, and a footman—immediately ceased their tasks. They pressed their backs flat against the cold marble walls, clasping their hands in front of them and lowering their eyes to the floor. No one dared to make eye contact. No one dared to breathe too loudly. The dark mafia-family protection atmosphere of the house demanded absolute, unquestioning submission.
"Mr. Moretti," Thomas murmured respectfully as Adrien passed, his American accent clipped and nervous. "The perimeter is secure for the night, sir. Shall I have the kitchen prepare your evening espresso?"
Adrien did not break his stride. He did not turn his head. "No," he replied, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated with quiet, lethal authority. "I want absolute silence on this floor. Dismiss the perimeter staff to the lower levels."
"Right away, sir," Thomas whispered, bowing his head even lower.

Adrien continued his slow, deliberate walk down the center of the grand hallway. He was a man who lived in a world of constant betrayal, violence, and calculated cruelty. Everyone in this city obeyed him instantly, driven by a deeply ingrained terror. He expected nothing less than total obedience. He expected the absolute silence he had just commanded.
But the universe, it seemed, had a very different plan for Adrien Moretti tonight.
