Chapter 7

"Boss," a rough, urgent voice called out from the doorway.

Adrien turned his head. Standing at the entrance to the library was Silas, one of Adrien’s top lieutenants. Silas was a massive man, his dark suit dripping wet from the heavy rain outside. His face was grim, a deep scar pulling at the corner of his mouth.

"I told the perimeter guards I needed to see you immediately," Silas said, stepping into the room. He didn't even notice Clara or the little girl sitting on the rug. "We have a massive problem at the docks. The Falcone family just hit our northern warehouse. Two of our men are—"

"Silas," Adrien cut him off, his voice slicing through the air like a razor blade.

Silas stopped, looking confused. "Boss, they breached the territory. We need to retaliate tonight. They brought heavy—"

"Silas, shut your mouth," Adrien commanded, taking two rapid, intimidating steps toward his lieutenant.

The sheer aggression in Adrien's posture forced the larger man to take a step back. Silas finally looked past Adrien’s broad shoulders and saw Clara, standing frozen in her black-and-white uniform, and the tiny girl in the pink dress playing on the floor.

"What the hell is this?" Silas muttered, his hand instinctively dropping toward the inside of his wet jacket.

"Remove your hand from your jacket, or I will break your arm," Adrien said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly whisper. "There is a child in the room. You do not speak of blood, you do not speak of violence, and you certainly do not reach for a weapon in her presence. Do you understand me?"

Silas swallowed hard, his eyes wide with shock. He slowly raised his hands, stepping back. "I apologize, Boss. I didn't see them."

"What is the situation?" Adrien asked, keeping his voice low enough that Lily couldn't hear over the sound of the rain lashing the windows.

"It's not just the docks," Silas whispered, stepping closer. "We caught a transmission. The Falcones paid someone off. They have the blueprints to this mansion, Adrien. They know about the security blind spots. They are making a move on the estate tonight."

Adrien’s gray eyes went completely dark. The sanctuary of his ultra-luxury mansion had been breached. The danger was no longer across the city; it was at his front door.

He slowly turned his head to look at Clara. The beautiful maid was clutching her chest, her eyes wide with terror, having heard just enough to know they were in grave danger.

"We are locking down the estate," Adrien declared.
