Chapter 10

Adrien didn't look up from the glowing security feeds on his tablet. His thick dark hair fell slightly over his forehead as he rapidly tapped the screen, monitoring the tactical positions of his men across the estate.

"In my world, Clara, loyalty and innocence are two things that do not exist," Adrien said, his deep voice filling the quiet study. "Men smile at me while plotting my death. Women look at me and only see power and money. But your daughter..."

Adrien finally looked up, his intense gray eyes meeting Clara’s across the room.

"Your daughter looked at a monster and asked him to play tag," Adrien finished quietly. "And you threw yourself on the floor, willing to die to protect her. That kind of purity doesn't belong in my house. But since it is here, I will not let the darkness of my life consume it."

Clara’s breath hitched. She pulled Lily closer to her chest, overwhelmed by the profound, protective gravity of the man sitting across from her.

Suddenly, the warm ambient lights of the study flickered and died.

The room was plunged into absolute darkness, illuminated only by the flickering orange glow of the fireplace. The emergency backup generators hummed to life, casting a dim, red tactical light across the mahogany walls.

Adrien stood up immediately. His expression hardened into a mask of pure, lethal calculation. He set the tablet down on the desk.

"They cut the main power," Adrien stated, his voice devoid of all warmth. "They are inside the perimeter."

Clara let out a muffled whimper, burying her face into Lily’s curls.

"Stay exactly where you are," Adrien commanded, moving swiftly toward the heavy oak doors of the study. He reached under his immaculate black suit jacket, his hand resting on the holster he had concealed all night.

He opened the heavy study door, revealing the dark, red-lit corridor of the West Wing. The sound of distant, muffled shouting echoed from the other side of the reinforced steel barricades. The war had reached his doorstep.

Adrien looked back into the room one last time. He saw the beautiful, terrified mother holding the innocent little girl in the pink dress. They were entirely dependent on him for survival.

"Keep her quiet, Clara," Adrien whispered, his eyes flashing with a dark, terrifying promise of violence directed entirely at the men outside. "I am going to end this."

Adrien stepped out into the dark hallway and pulled the heavy study doors shut behind him, the latch clicking securely into place, leaving Clara and Lily safely locked in the sanctuary as he went to face the storm.
