Chapter 4

An hour later, the oppressive atmosphere of the master suite had completely shifted. Massimo Pascale was no longer the vulnerable, shirtless man in the shower. He sat behind a massive oak desk near the suite’s bay windows, fully dressed in a tailored black dress shirt and dark trousers, the sleek black wheelchair tucked perfectly into the recess of the desk. The bright Boston sunlight illuminated the sharp, handsome lines of his face, the light stubble now perfectly trimmed.

Tessa stood in the periphery, organizing a tray of physical therapy resistance bands and medications on a side table. She kept her movements quiet, acutely aware of the two large men who had just entered the room.

Dante and Silas, Massimo’s top lieutenants, stood rigidly in front of the desk. They were broad, imposing men in tailored suits, but they kept their hands clasped respectfully in front of them, their eyes deferential. The contrast between the helpless man in the bathroom and the terrifying authority figure barking orders was jarring, yet fascinating to Tessa.

"The shipment at the docks was intercepted," Dante reported, his Boston accent thick. "The O'Connor crew is testing the perimeter. They heard the rumors, Boss. They think you're... sidelined."

Massimo’s dark eyes narrowed, a lethal, cold intelligence flashing across his features. The heavily muscled forearms resting on the desk flexed.

"They think a wheelchair makes me deaf and blind?" Massimo asked, his voice a low, vibrating threat. "Cut their supply lines in the South End. Burn the warehouses on Pier Four tonight. I want the sky glowing by midnight. Let them know the throne is not empty."

"Yes, Boss," Silas nodded immediately. He hesitated, his eyes flicking briefly toward Tessa, who was pretending to read a medical chart. "And the... other matter?"

"Speak freely," Massimo commanded, not bothering to look at the therapist. "She doesn't care about our business."

"The internal audit," Dante continued, lowering his voice slightly. "Someone in the inner circle is leaking your medical status. The O'Connors knew exactly when your surgery was scheduled last week."

Massimo’s jaw locked. The idea of betrayal within his own house was a poison. He slammed a heavy pen onto the desk, the loud crack making the lieutenants flinch.

"Find the rat," Massimo ordered quietly. "And when you do, bring him to the basement. I will deal with him myself."

Tessa’s hand paused over the medication tray. The calm, business-like manner in which he ordered arson and violence was chilling. Yet, she maintained her professional facade, picking up a blood pressure cuff and turning toward the desk.

"Gentlemen," Tessa said, her voice clear and authoritative, slicing through the heavy mafia tension. "Mr. Pascale’s hour is up. It is time for his physical therapy session. You will have to reschedule your... logistics."

Dante stared at her, utterly bewildered by her audacity. He looked at Massimo, expecting the boss to explode. Instead, Massimo let out a slow, sharp exhale, waving a dismissive hand at his men.

"Wait outside," Massimo instructed.

As the lieutenants left, Massimo turned his dark, intense gaze onto Tessa. "You have a terrible habit of giving orders in my house, Miss Fitzgerald."

"It's on the schedule, Mr. Pascale," Tessa replied smoothly, walking toward him with the blood pressure cuff. "Sleeves up, please."
