Chapter 9

The tension instantly flooded back into the room. Massimo’s cynical smile vanished, his expression hardening into a mask of pure, unforgiving wrath. The transition was terrifyingly fast. The vulnerable man discussing his trauma was gone; the ruthless mafia boss had returned.
"Bring him to the main foyer," Massimo commanded, his voice cold and metallic.
Tessa stood up as Massimo wheeled himself rapidly out of the control room. She followed him down the marble corridors, the smell of gunpowder and smoke hanging faintly in the air. They reached the grand foyer, where the massive crystal chandelier illuminated the destruction. The front doors were barricaded, and shattered glass littered the floor.
Kneeling in the center of the room, held firmly by two large guards, was a young, bloodied man. It was one of Massimo's junior accountants, a kid who handled the medical billing. He was sobbing, his face pale with terror.
Massimo wheeled his sleek black chair directly in front of the traitor. He didn't speak immediately. He just stared down at the young man, his heavily tattooed arms resting on the armrests, projecting an aura of absolute doom.
"I'm sorry, Boss!" the accountant cried, pulling against his captors. "The O'Connors, they threatened my family! They just wanted to know your medical schedule! They said they wouldn't hurt you, they just wanted to know if the paralysis was permanent!"
"And you told them," Massimo said, his voice deadly quiet.
"I had no choice!"
Massimo looked up, scanning the room. A dozen of his highest-ranking men were standing in a circle, watching him. They were waiting to see how the crippled boss would handle treason. This was a critical moment; if he showed hesitation, the empire would fracture.
Massimo reached down and locked the brakes of his wheelchair with two sharp clicks.
He looked over his shoulder at Tessa, who was standing a few feet away. His eyes conveyed a silent, intense request. Tessa understood immediately. He couldn't execute the man from a seated position; he needed to assert ultimate physical dominance.
Tessa stepped forward, moving into her professional role. She stood next to the wheelchair, planting her feet firmly. She offered him her arm, bracing her core.
Massimo placed one heavy, tattooed hand on the armrest, and wrapped his other massive arm around Tessa’s shoulders. Using his phenomenal upper body strength, and utilizing Tessa as a physical anchor to balance his paralyzed lower half, Massimo pulled himself up.
A collective gasp echoed through the foyer as the feared Boston mafia boss stood upright. His legs could not support his weight, but suspended by his own sheer will and Tessa’s steady brace, he towered over the kneeling traitor. The physical effort cost him excruciating pain, sweat beading on his forehead, but his face remained a mask of stone.
He looked down at the accountant, his broad shoulders casting a long, terrifying shadow.

"There are always choices," Massimo whispered.
He drew his handgun from his waistband and aimed it directly at the man's chest.
