Chapter 1

Salvatore did not let Victor turn the emergency room into a family standoff.

“Move.”

Victor remained between him and Lucia. “You put your hands on my son again, and—”

A hospital security officer stepped in before Salvatore answered.

Dr. Miles Keane pointed toward Lucia’s bed. “Nobody is fighting in my emergency department. She is twenty-nine weeks pregnant, she fell down six stairs, and I need to know whether there is placental injury.”

That brought the room back to reality.

Lucia lay beneath a hospital blanket with bruising along one arm and hip. Fetal monitoring showed a stable heartbeat, but Miles wanted serial monitoring, an ultrasound, a complete blood count, metabolic testing, coagulation studies, and additional samples because Lucia had arrived with symptoms that did not fit the fall alone.

She had been unusually fatigued for weeks.

Headaches.

Abdominal discomfort.

Intermittent numbness in two fingers.

And anemia that had worsened faster than her obstetrician expected.

Miles had already ordered a specialized whole-blood toxicology panel.

That was the tray Adrian knocked down.

Police arrived while nurses drew replacement samples.

Adrian immediately objected.

“You don’t have consent to send anything outside this hospital.”

Lucia turned her head toward him.

“Yes, they do.”

Her voice was weak but clear.

“It’s my blood.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Victor said, “She’s medicated.”

Miles answered, “She is oriented, competent, and fully capable of making her own medical decisions.”

Lucia looked at the detective.

“Send everything.”

That ended the argument.

Then officers secured Adrian’s phone.

The staircase video had not been filmed by a person.

It was a recording from the Costa home’s security system that Adrian had downloaded onto his phone.

The first twenty seconds showed Lucia walking toward the upstairs landing with a folder in one hand.

Adrian followed.

She turned.

They argued.

There was no audio.

Lucia stepped backward toward the stairs.

Adrian reached for the folder.

She pulled away.

Then he shoved her.

Not a catastrophic launch down an entire staircase.

One hard two-handed push.

Enough.

Lucia lost her footing and fell down six steps before striking the lower landing.

Adrian stood above her for nearly three seconds.

Then ran down.

Detective Hannah Vale paused the video.

“Why was this on your phone?”

Adrian said nothing.

His attorney had not arrived yet.

Victor answered for him.

“He was reviewing home security after an accident.”

Lucia looked at her father.

“It wasn’t an accident.”

Salvatore’s expression did not change.

He had already admitted to police that he slapped Adrian after Lucia was safe and Adrian was no longer advancing. His own conduct would be reviewed separately.

Then Miles returned from the nurses’ station.

“One more thing.”

Everyone looked at him.

“When Mrs. Costa arrived, she brought a bottle of prenatal supplements in her handbag.”

Lucia nodded faintly.

“I take them every morning.”

Miles held up the sealed evidence bag.

The label read:

COSTA MATERNA — COMPLETE PRENATAL FORMULA

Victor’s company.

Adrian’s company.

Miles continued.

“The lot number has been scratched off the bottle.”

Adrian stopped looking at Lucia.

That was the first moment Salvatore understood the blood tray and the staircase might belong to the same story.
