Chapter 9

The Morelli freight records broke the lot history open.
Costa Materna’s manufacturing system said 13,760 units derived from H7 had been destroyed.
Freight records showed otherwise.
Two trailers left the quarantine warehouse after the recorded destruction date.
Trailer one:
Northcrest Medical Supply.
Trailer two:
Costa Materna physician-sample fulfillment center.
Weights roughly matched the missing inventory.
Then another anomaly appeared.
The destruction certificate itself listed 9,400 pounds of nutritional product.
The waste processor’s scale ticket showed 3,180 pounds.
The remaining weight had never reached the destruction facility.
Adrian signed the internal certificate anyway.
Victor countersigned.
Then the bank’s field examiner arrived.
Costa Materna’s borrowing-base certificates included the Northcrest receivable and inventory that should have remained ineligible.
Estimated overstatement during the worst month:
$11.4 million.
The bank did not immediately accuse everyone of bank fraud.
It froze additional borrowing.
Required daily cash reporting.
Installed an independent field auditor.
Demanded updated inventory valuation.
Victor called it financial strangulation.
The bank called it credit administration.
Then investigators found a spreadsheet on Adrian’s laptop.
Three columns:
Quarantine Exposure
Borrowing Deficiency
Conversion Plan
Under conversion plan:
Reclass to sample.
Transfer to Northcrest.
Generate invoice.
Retest finished goods.
Replace before bank field exam.
A note beside M7-442B:
Family stock OK — keep internal.
Lucia stared at it.
“Family stock?”
Her own bottles.
Adrian had not accidentally brought home one random contaminated unit.
He had taken cartons from the affected inventory for executive and family use because doing so helped make that inventory disappear from the quarantined count.
Did he know Lucia’s specific bottle exceeded the lead specification?
Investigators could not prove that.
He knew the lot had failed.
He believed later blended testing supported lower risk.
That distinction would matter.
Then came the pre-twist clue that disturbed Miles most.
Adrian had emailed Costa Materna’s medical director after Lucia first complained of headaches.
Pregnant family user on M7 stock. Any urgent concern if asymptomatic otherwise?
Medical director:
If confirmed M7, discontinue immediately and obtain blood lead level through treating physician.
Adrian:
Do not contact patient. I’ll confirm lot first.
He never did.
Instead, he told Lucia the product was safe.
That transformed the case.
The company’s own physician had told him what to do.
Adrian chose not to let Lucia know.
Then, in the emergency room, the moment Miles finally ordered the blood test Adrian had been told to obtain weeks earlier, Adrian knocked the tray onto the floor.

The action looked less impulsive now.
He knew exactly what those tubes might prove.
