Chapter 7

Adrian’s lawyers said the Northcrest deal was legitimate.

New distributor.

Long payment terms.

Slow onboarding.

Nothing illegal about selling product through a small wholesaler.

Then Northcrest’s warehouse was inspected.

Investigators found most of the M7-442B cartons still there.

Unopened.

No downstream customers.

No meaningful sales activity.

The distributor had effectively parked the inventory.

Why invoice it at full price?

Northcrest’s president eventually cooperated.

Victor asked him to “warehouse the goods temporarily” while Costa Materna completed a bank review.

“I thought they were good product.”

“Did you intend to pay one-point-one-six million dollars?”

“Eventually, if we sold it.”

“Did you have purchase orders?”

“No.”

“Customers?”

“Not yet.”

Then:

“Did Mr. Costa tell you why the transaction had to occur before month-end?”

The man hesitated.

“He said the bank likes receivables more than blocked inventory.”

That sentence went directly to federal investigators.

Then Lucia’s medical status improved.

Her confirmatory blood test remained elevated but stable.

She was started on an exposure-reduction and nutritional management plan under specialists; treatment decisions were conservative because pregnancy changed the risk-benefit analysis.

Serial ultrasounds remained reassuring.

No doctor promised there would be no developmental consequence later.

No doctor told her to expect one.

Monitoring would continue after birth.

Lucia’s bruising from the staircase healed more quickly than the marriage did.

She filed for an emergency protective order.

Then temporary legal separation.

Adrian requested contact through counsel.

She declined.

Victor sent a handwritten note:

Whatever business mistakes occurred, Adrian loves you.

Lucia read it once.

Then wrote beneath it:

Love does not push a pregnant woman down stairs.

She gave the note to her lawyer.

Not because it proved a crime.

Because she was finished keeping family sentences private simply because they were embarrassing.

Meanwhile, investigators recovered Adrian’s deleted text thread with Victor.

Quality failure day:

Adrian:

If we quarantine all H7 derivatives we blow availability.

Victor:

Then do not quarantine all derivatives.

Adrian:

QC already did.

Victor:

QC does not run treasury.

Two days later:

Adrian:

Northcrest will hold finished goods.

Victor:

Invoice before Friday.

Adrian:

They cannot pay yet.

Victor:

They do not need to pay yet.

Then, after Lucia confronted Adrian:

Adrian:

She found M7 manifest.

Victor:

How much?

Adrian:

Enough.

Victor:

May you like

Do not let her call Salvatore until we know what she copied.

The staircase happened seventeen minutes later.
