Chapter 10

The screams of Marcus Hale faded down the long, opulent corridors of the Moretti mansion, eventually swallowed by the heavy, soundproofed doors of the lower levels. In the breakfast room, Bianca Sterling remained on the Persian rug, sobbing uncontrollably, staring at the stainless-steel dog bowl that had just become the horrifying instrument of her own demise.

Vittorio Moretti did not look back. He buttoned the cuffs of his white dress shirt, his large hands steady and precise, hiding the dark tattoos that snaked up his forearms. The ruthless Mafia boss retreated into the shadows of his mind, and the protective father stepped back into the light.

He walked purposefully down the main hallway, passing portraits of his ancestors and priceless works of art, until he reached the heavy oak door of his private study. He knocked twice—a gentle, rhythmic pattern.

"Emma, it's me," Vittorio called out softly.

The heavy deadbolt clicked, and the door swung inward. Emma Clark stood there, her beige housekeeper uniform neatened, though her dark-brown eyes were still wide with adrenaline. In the center of the dark, leather-bound study, little Lucy sat on a massive chesterfield sofa, holding a pristine first-edition book like a shield.

When Lucy saw her father, she dropped the book and scrambled off the sofa.

"Daddy!" she cried, running across the hardwood floor.

Vittorio dropped to one knee, catching his daughter and sweeping her up into a fierce, protective embrace. He buried his face in her soft light-brown hair, breathing in the scent of her innocent, sweet shampoo, grounding himself in the reality that she was safe.

"I've got you, principessa," Vittorio whispered, kissing her cheek. "I've got you. Nobody will ever hurt you again. I swear it on my life."

He stood up, holding Lucy securely against his chest, and looked at Emma. The young woman stood by the door, her hands respectfully clasped in front of her. She had saved his daughter from a psychological torment he had been too blind to see.

"Emma," Vittorio said, his tone thick with genuine gratitude. "You are no longer a housekeeper in this mansion. Name your salary. Name your position. From this day forward, you are under the permanent protection of the Moretti family."

Emma gave a small, polite bow, her delicate features softening into a relieved smile. "Thank you, Mr. Moretti. I only wanted to protect Lucy. She is a wonderful little girl."

Vittorio nodded, turning to walk deeper into the study to comfort his daughter.

But as he turned, his sharp, intense gray eyes caught a glimpse of Emma's smartphone, resting on the edge of the mahogany desk. The screen was still glowing.

Vittorio paused. He stepped closer to the desk, his brow furrowing. The phone wasn't just displaying the video she had shown him earlier. It was open to an encrypted messaging application.

A single, recently received text message illuminated the screen, written in a cipher Vittorio recognized instantly—a code used exclusively by the federal authorities.

Target intercepted. Sterling syndicate exposed. Awaiting your signal for extraction, Agent Clark.

Vittorio’s blood turned to ice. He slowly lowered Lucy to the floor, telling her to go play with the globe in the corner of the room. He turned back around to face the young woman in the modest beige uniform.

Emma was no longer smiling. Her posture had shifted, abandoning the submissive stance of a housekeeper, replacing it with the rigid, trained stillness of a federal operative.

"You didn't just record the abuse, did you, Emma?" Vittorio asked, his voice a lethal whisper, the Mafia boss instantly returning to the surface.

Emma reached into her apron, resting her hand on something heavy concealed beneath the fabric.

"No, Mr. Moretti," Emma replied, her American accent dropping its soft, anxious tone for something cold and professional. "I recorded everything."
