Chapter 23 - Mark apologizes to Lily

I did not want Mark near Lily again.

Then, two years later, he sent a letter through his lawyer.

Not to Lily.

To me.

He wrote:

I understand that my schedule disclosures made it easier for Claire to hide what she was doing. I did not know the details, but I knew she wanted certainty about your absences and I chose not to ask why because the money was useful.

There.

I am not asking for contact with Lily.

Good.

I only want you to know I no longer describe what I did as “wedding logistics.”

There.

I accepted money to disclose information I was trusted to protect.

Accurate.

He included a separate apology addressed to Lily but said:

Only give this to her if a therapist believes it is useful.

We did not.

Lily was six.

Mark was a name in the adult story.

No need to add another emotional task.

I kept the letter in my own file.

Not hers.

Some accountability belongs between adults.

Mark later became operations manager at a regional nonprofit.

I learned accidentally through LinkedIn.

No reason to intervene.

No blacklist.

I had enough power to ruin his next job with one phone call.

That did not mean I had the right.

He lost my trust.

His role.

Money.

Reputation in our professional circle.

Then life continued.

That is how consequences should often work.

Finite.

Specific.

May you like

Not hereditary.
