Chapter 3 - The number 287

Two hundred eighty-seven sounded monstrous.

It also sounded simple.

It was neither.

Thomas explained it carefully before investigators took control.

Our residential system recorded motion-triggered clips in common areas.

No bedrooms.

No bathrooms.

No audio by default.

Front halls.

Stairwells.

Living room.

Kitchen entry.

Laundry corridor.

Garage.

Playroom entrance.

Recordings automatically retained for ninety days unless flagged.

Why did 287 exist longer?

Because Claire had asked security administration to preserve:

“Lily behavior incidents.”

Thomas had discovered that request the previous day during a routine retention audit.

His deputy had approved automatic tagging without understanding content.

So:

287 did not mean 287 punishments.

Important.

Some clips were ordinary.

Lily carrying toys.

Claire walking past.

Staff doing laundry.

Dog? We had no dog.

No dog.

Housekeepers.

Deliveries.

About forty-six clips ultimately showed behavior investigators considered potentially relevant.

Nineteen showed Lily being placed in the laundry room or standing outside it.

Seven involved what Claire called:

service practice.

Four showed removal of food or dessert following crying or refusal.

Several showed Claire blocking Lily from reaching household staff during tantrums.

Others documented conversations visually without audio.

One clip showed Claire kneeling and hugging Lily after a nightmare.

Another showed them coloring together.

Another showed Claire carrying Lily upstairs asleep.

Those mattered too.

People are not required to be cruel every minute to be responsible for cruelty in specific ones.

The laundry-room door had a keypad lock because chemicals and cleaning supplies were stored in an inner cabinet.

The outer room itself was not normally locked.

Claire had asked facilities to install a childproof latch high on the exterior after Lily once entered unsupervised.

Reasonable safety purpose.

Then footage showed Claire using that same latch while Lily was inside.

Repurposed safety.

That phrase appeared later in the investigator’s report.

The room contained:

Washer.

Dryer.

Utility sink.

Bench.

Ventilation.

No dangerous temperature.

But a four-year-old could not open the door.

Longest confirmed confinement:

Thirty-eight minutes.

Shortest:

Six.

Not days.

Not overnight.

Still unacceptable when used coercively and combined with threats that her father would not return.

The number became less sensational.

The pattern became worse.

Because it was no longer:

one terrible afternoon.

May you like

It was a system.
