Chapter 12 - the boardroom ambush

The 45th floor of the Whitmore Tower in Midtown Manhattan was lined with polished glass, brushed steel, and tense executive faces.

Inside the grand boardroom, twelve board members sat around the forty-foot glass conference table. At the head of the table sat Thomas Sterling, impeccably dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit. He looked strikingly like his late sister Clara, with sharp blue eyes and aristocratic cheekbones.

Sitting beside him was Julian Vance, sweating profusely through his white collar, constantly glancing at his watch.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Thomas said smoothly, his voice carrying the calm authority of an old-money dynast. "As the managing partner of Osprey Holdings, which now controls fifty-one percent of Whitmore Logistics voting shares via the Sterling Trust and Mrs. Elise Whitmore’s legal proxy, I am calling this emergency session to order."

An elderly board member, Marcus Vance Sr., cleared his throat. "Thomas, Mark Whitmore founded this firm. He built ninety percent of the European routes. Ousting him without his presence is irregular."

"Mark Whitmore has abandoned his fiduciary responsibilities," Thomas countered smoothly. "Worse, his home is currently under criminal investigation for domestic neglect. The Whitmore name is a toxic liability. Under Section 14 of our corporate charter, a majority shareholder vote can immediately revoke his CEO status and install new leadership."

Thomas slid the voting resolution across the table. "Julian, call the roll."

Julian Vance picked up the pen with trembling fingers. "First vote... Osprey Holdings, controlling fifty-one percent..."

The heavy double doors of the boardroom burst open with a resounding crack that rattled the glass walls.

Mark Whitmore walked in.

His navy suit was wrinkled, his hair windblown, and his knuckles were bruised, but his eyes burned with an icy, terrifying intensity.

The entire boardroom fell dead silent.

"Mark," Thomas said, not missing a beat, a cold smile touching his lips. "You’re late. And you’re outvoted."

Mark didn't look at the other board members. He walked straight down the length of the table and stopped directly across from Thomas Sterling.

"The meeting is adjourned, Thomas," Mark said evenly.

"You don't have the authority to adjourn anything," Thomas laughed softly. "I own fifty-one percent of this table."

"You owned fifty-one percent twenty minutes ago," Mark said. He pulled a thick sheaf of legal faxes from his inner jacket pocket and slapped them down on top of the voting ledger. "At 8:45 a.m., Westchester County Supreme Court issued an emergency temporary injunction freezing all assets connected to Elise Whitmore due to felony conspiracy charges. Her proxy is null and void."

Julian Vance choked on his own breath, dropping his pen.

Mark leaned across the table, his face inches from Thomas’s. "And at 8:50 a.m., the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York unsealed an indictment against Osprey Holdings for money laundering, wire fraud, and the murder of Clara Sterling Whitmore."
