Chapter 2 - locked doors

"Stay with Rosa," Mark said softly, his voice dropping into the quiet, terrifying tone he used only in high-stakes negotiations. He slipped off his tailored suit jacket and draped it over Lily’s shivering shoulders.

Lily clung to the lapels of his jacket, burying her face into his shirt. "Daddy, don't leave."

"I am right here, sweetheart. Nobody is touching you again," Mark promised, kissing the top of her head. He handed her to Rosa, whose eyes were filled with tears of relief and dread. "Take her upstairs to my private suite. Lock the door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me."

Rosa nodded firmly, wrapping her arms around the little girl. "Yes, Mr. Whitmore."

As Rosa carried Lily up the back staircase, Mark turned around to face Elise. She was already retreating toward the parlor, clutching her purse.

"Where do you think you’re going?" Mark asked, stepping into her path.

"To call my lawyer," Elise fired back, trying to regain her regal posture. "You barge in here like a madman, humiliating me in front of the help. Lily has severe behavioral issues, Mark. Her pediatrician warned us she might develop pica or food-hoarding tendencies while you were away. I had to discipline her."

"You disciplined my six-year-old by putting food in a dog bowl?" Mark stepped closer, towering over her. "And who authorized security guards inside my family wing? The contract specifies perimeter defense only."

"I upgraded the detail for our safety!" Elise said sharply. "You leave us alone for weeks at a time! I felt threatened!"

"You felt threatened by an empty house and a child?" Mark walked over to the security console mounted beside the study door. He tapped in his administrative master code. The digital screen flashed red: ACCESS DENIED.

Mark stopped. He stared at the keypad. "You changed my master bypass."

"The system had a glitch last Tuesday," Elise said quickly, her fingers twitching against her purse strap. "Ray Miller—the head of the night shift—reprogrammed the system. I told him to email you the new credentials."

"Ray Miller isn't my head of security," Mark said slowly, turning his head. "Marcus Cole runs my estate detail. Where is Marcus?"

Elise’s gaze flickered to the floor. "Marcus took a leave of absence three weeks ago. Family emergency. Ray stepped in."

Mark pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed Marcus Cole directly. The line rang twice, then a recorded operator message chimed: *The number you have reached has been disconnected or is no longer in service.*

Mark lowered the phone. He looked at his wife, seeing the cold, desperate calculations happening behind her eyes. "You fired my entire personal team the minute my jet cleared New York airspace."

"I didn't fire anyone!" Elise snapped.

Mark walked past her, heading straight for the estate’s security office in the basement. He didn't wait for her permission. When he pushed through the heavy double doors of the surveillance hub, the room was deserted. The primary monitor banks were dark.

On the main console desk lay an open personnel file and a single visitor badge. Mark picked up the badge. It was registered to Ray Miller, but clipped to the back of it was an access keycard marked with a silver crest he recognized instantly.
