Chapter 4 - the midnight visitor

Mark shoved the torn medical evaluation into his pocket. His mind moved at light speed, piecing together the timeline. This wasn't just cruel domestic abuse. It was an orchestrated legal setup. If Lily was documented as severely neglected and unstable while Mark was away running his business, Elise could file for emergency emergency guardianship, seizing total control of Clara Sterling’s trust fund—an estate worth over eighty million dollars.

"Rosa, stay in Lily’s room with the door locked," Mark ordered. "Keep my phone. If anyone knocks other than me, call the state police."

Mark walked back up the marble stairs and strouded into the formal study. Elise was standing by the antique mahogany desk, frantically packing papers into a leather tote bag.

"Leaving so soon?" Mark asked, shutting the heavy study doors behind him with a firm, deliberate thud.

Elise jumped, clutching the bag to her chest. "I’m going to a hotel, Mark. You’re acting completely irrational. We can discuss your daughter’s behavioral therapy tomorrow with our family attorneys."

"Which attorney, Elise? Mine, or the ones who work for the Sterlings?"

Elise’s mouth fell open. For a split second, genuine shock broke through her icy mask. "I don't know what you’re talking about."

Mark tossed the silver crest keycard onto the desk between them. It clattered against the polished wood.

Elise stared at it, her breathing turning shallow. "Ray must have dropped that. I don't manage the security guards' personal belongings."

"Ray isn't a guard," Mark said, walking closer until he was standing just inches from her. "He’s an operative hired to stage an institutionalization case against my six-year-old child. Who hired him, Elise? Was it Clara’s brother? Or did you come up with this sick plan all by yourself?"

"You don't understand anything!" Elise cried out, her voice rising in shrill desperation. "Your precious late wife didn't leave that money to you! She left it in a restricted trust that Lily inherits at eighteen, with nothing for me! I gave up four years of my life to play stepmother to a broken, traumatized kid while you built your empire! I deserve financial protection!"

"So you starved her?" Mark’s voice was dangerously quiet. "You made her eat like an animal to manufacture medical evidence?"

"I gave her what the doctor told me to give her!" Elise shouted. "Dr. Vance is a licensed specialist! He wrote the protocol!"

"Dr. Vance?" Mark caught the name instantly. "Julian Vance? My corporate tax attorney’s brother?"

Before Elise could answer, the mansion’s front doorbell chimed loudly through the quiet halls.

Mark looked toward the foyer monitors on the wall. A sleek black town car was idling in the circular driveway. A man carrying a leather medical bag had just stepped up to the front porch, accompanied by two uniformed men.

Elise let out a sharp, triumphant breath, stepping toward the door. "That’s Dr. Vance now. And he brought the state child welfare escort."
