Chapter 13 - the breakthrough

Dominic, Sofia, and Emma slammed through the heavy wooden drainage door, bursting out into the freezing Chicago night.
They were half a mile away from the estate, standing at the edge of the icy Chicago River under a crumbling concrete bridge. The freezing air burned their lungs, but they were alive.
Dominic held Elena’s leather journal tightly under his arm.
Sofia collapsed against the concrete wall, clutching Emma, who was shivering violently from the cold. Dominic immediately pulled off his heavy black suit jacket and wrapped it around both mother and daughter, kneeling beside them in the snow.
"Are you hurt?" Dominic asked, his hands hovering over Sofia’s face, his eyes filled with intense concern.
"We're... we're okay," Sofia gasped, her breath blooming white in the freezing air. "Dominic... your mother..."
"She isn't my mother anymore," Dominic said, his voice cold and resolute. "She's an enemy of the Moretti family."
Dominic opened the journal to the very last page. Tucked inside the back cover was a folded document—a secret offshore banking ledger detailing every monthly payment made by Victoria Moretti to key syndicate members.
And there, listed under the October 2021 payments, was a direct transfer to an account titled: PROJECT ROMANO.
"Look," Dominic pointed at the entry.
Sofia leaned in close, her shoulder pressing against Dominic’s chest. "Project Romano? That's Julian!"
"Read the sub-text, Sofia," Dominic said softly.
Sofia scanned the fine print beneath the account name. Her eyes widened, and her breath hitched.
*Recipient: Julian Romano.*
*Purpose: Monthly retainer for the protection and concealment of the surviving heir.*
Sofia looked up at Dominic, her brain struggling to comprehend the words. "Surviving heir? What does that mean? Elena's daughter died in the bomb!"
Dominic stared at the ledger, then slowly turned his head to look at three-year-old Emma, who was quietly cuddling her rag doll under his suit jacket.
"Sofia..." Dominic whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion he hadn't felt in three long years. "What blood type is Emma?"
Sofia blinked, startled. "O-negative. Why?"
Dominic reached into his inner pocket, pulling out a faded medical card he had carried in his wallet every day since his daughter was born. He held it up next to the ledger.
Elena's daughter was O-negative. A rare blood type shared by less than seven percent of the population.
Dominic looked at Emma's pale face, her rosy cheeks, and the gentle curve of her nose. The resemblance to Elena was suddenly blindingly obvious.

"She didn't die," Dominic whispered, tears finally streaming down his rugged face. "Julian didn't plant the bomb, Sofia... Julian saved my daughter."
