Chapter 5 - the wrong answer

Sofia’s throat felt completely dry. "This morning... Emma found an old silver key in the east corridor of the mansion. Tied with a blue ribbon."

Dominic’s expression hardened into pure granite. "That was Elena’s key. It opened her private writing desk in the conservatory. I searched for that key for three years. Who took it from her?"

"Charles," Sofia whispered, the realization hitting her like a tidal wave. "Charles took it from Emma right before you called me into your office. He was furious, Mr. Moretti. He looked... terrified."

Dominic didn't hesitate. He pulled out his luxury encrypted phone and dialed a three-digit speed dial.

"Frank," Dominic growled into the phone. "Bring four men to the estate manager’s quarters. Secure Charles Bennett immediately. Do not let him leave the grounds."

He ended the call and looked down at Sofia. "You and the girl are coming with me back to the mansion."

"No!" Sofia backed away. "We're not going back into that house!"

"You aren't safe here," Dominic insisted, his voice rising slightly. "If Charles knows your daughter found that key, he knows Julian left something behind. He will come here, Sofia."

Sofia looked at Emma, who was watching them with wide, innocent eyes, then looked back at Dominic. She knew he was right.

Twenty minutes later, a fleet of three black SUVs tore through the snow-covered streets of Chicago, escorting Dominic, Sofia, and Emma back to the Moretti estate.

When they arrived at the grand gates, the estate was in utter chaos. Red lights flashed silently against the snow.

Frank, Dominic’s chief lieutenant, ran up to the lead SUV as Dominic stepped out into the freezing night air.

"Boss!" Frank yelled, his face grim. "We went to Charles's quarters like you said."

"Where is he?" Dominic demanded.

"He's gone, Boss," Frank reported, holding up a heavy steel lockbox that had been pried open. "His room was completely cleaned out. Passport, cash, hard drives—all gone. But we found this on his desk."

Frank handed Dominic a sealed Manila envelope. Written on the front in Charles’s elegant handwriting was a single sentence:

*For Don Dominic — The truth about October 14th.*

Dominic ripped open the envelope. Inside was a single USB flash drive and a handwritten note.

Dominic unfolded the note under the harsh security floodlights. The text read:

*I didn't kill your wife, Dominic. Julian Romano did. I paid him to stay silent to protect the syndicate, but he got greedy. Look at the files on the drive. He was working for the Genovese family.*

Sofia, standing nearby under the protection of two armed guards, heard every word. "That's a lie!" she screamed, rushing forward. "Julian would never work for the Genovese!"

Dominic stared at the note, his eyes dark and unreadable. On the surface, it was a clean, logical answer: Julian was a traitor who bombed the car, Charles covered it up to avoid a war, and now Charles ran when the key was found.

It was a perfect payoff. It explained the money, the stamp, and the key.

Dominic turned the USB drive over in his hand. But as he looked closely at the plastic casing, his thumb brushed over a fresh, distinct smudged fingerprint in red wax.

It was the same red seal used exclusively by Rosa Bellini in the mansion kitchen.
