Chapter 4 - confrontation at the doorstep

Sofia slammed the metal box shut, shoved the loose floorboard back into place, and kicked the rug over it.

"Stay here, Emma," Sofia whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

She walked slowly toward the front door, looking through the tiny peep-hole. Standing in the dimly lit, peeling hallway outside was not a mafia enforcer.

It was Dominic Moretti.

He was standing alone, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his tailored black overcoat, the collar turned up against the cold.

Sofia unbolted the lock and opened the door a crack, keeping the safety chain engaged. "Mr. Moretti? What are you doing here?"

Dominic didn't answer right away. His dark eyes flicked over the cracked paint, the water-stained ceiling, and the bitter cold seeping through the hallway frame.

"Open the door, Sofia," he said, his voice quiet but carrying undeniable authority.

"It's late, and I've finished my shift—"

"I didn't follow you here to threaten you," Dominic said. He reached into his coat and pulled out an old, faded blueprint, pressing it against the crack in the door. "Your husband didn't just leave a photograph. He left a paper trail in the estate's maintenance logs. And he was receiving payments from an offshore account every month until the day he died."

Sofia’s eyes widened. She slowly unhooked the chain and opened the door.

Dominic stepped into the tiny apartment, his tall frame instantly making the modest space feel suffocatingly small. He looked down at Emma, who was sitting on the small worn sofa, clutching Daisy tight to her chest.

"Who was paying him, Mr. Moretti?" Sofia asked, her voice trembling. "Tell me!"

"I don't know yet," Dominic admitted, looking around the room until his eyes landed on the area rug near the bedroom doorway. His keen eyes noticed the faint trace of sawdust resting on top of the fabric. "But Julian was receiving ten thousand dollars a month. A simple mechanic doesn't make that kind of money unless he's buying silence... or selling it."

Dominic took three deliberate steps toward the bedroom.

"Wait!" Sofia stepped directly in front of him, planting her hands on his chest to stop him.

The physical contact made both of them freeze. Dominic looked down at her hands resting against his black suit jacket, then up into her terrified chestnut eyes.

"You have no right to come into my home and search my things," Sofia said, her voice shaking with a mixture of fear and newfound defiance. "You rule the city, Don Moretti, but you don't rule this room."

Dominic’s jaw clenched. For the first time in years, someone was standing up to him without a weapon. He looked at her tight grip on his jacket, feeling the warmth of her palms through the fabric.

Instead of pushing her aside, Dominic reached out and gently took her wrists, lowering her hands from his chest. "I am trying to find out who murdered my wife and child, Sofia. And if your husband was involved, you are in danger too."

Before Sofia could reply, Emma walked over and gently tugged on the hem of Dominic’s black trousers.

Dominic looked down. The terrifying mob boss froze as the three-year-old girl held up her ragged doll toward him.

"Daisy says the bad man with the shiny key came here yesterday," Emma said softly.

Dominic’s eyes snapped up from the little girl to Sofia. "What key?"
