Chapter 15 - payoff + open ending

The grand living room of the Moretti estate was quiet save for the crackle of the marble fireplace.

Victor stood firm on the upper step, his posture immovable, his broad frame completely shielding Ellie and Mia behind him.

Ellie clutched her pale-lavender dress, her small fingers wrapping around Mia’s hand. Both girls looked up at Victor with absolute trust. They were safe. The cruelty of Celeste was gone forever. The traitors who had threatened their lives were sitting in federal holding cells. Victor’s protection over them was absolute, unbreakable, and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Justice for Season 1 had been won. Victor had defended his home, proven Ellie’s legal right, rescued his true biological daughter Mia, and shattered Sal Moretti’s syndicate into dust.

Clara looked at the two young girls, her eyes lingering for a brief second before she looked back up at Victor.

"You won tonight’s battle, Victor," Clara said, her voice smooth and chillingly calm. "Keep the girls in this house. Protect them. Feed them. They are safe under your roof... for now."

"Leave my estate, Clara," Victor said, his voice pure steel. "Before I forget who you used to be."

Clara smiled faintly, stepped backward toward the open double doors, and vanished into the pouring Manhattan rain along with her two bodyguards. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind her.

Marco stepped up beside Victor, his face grim. "Boss... she controls the Commission now. Tomorrow morning, every family in New York will be taking orders from her."

"Let them," Victor said, setting his gun on the side table and turning to pick up both Ellie and Mia in his arms. "This house stands alone."

An hour later, the mansion was completely quiet. Ellie and Mia were fast asleep in the master bedroom suite under the watch of four armed guards.

Victor walked into his private study alone. He locked the heavy double doors behind him and sat down at his mahogany desk under the single brass reading lamp.

On his desk lay the silver briefcase recovered from Julian’s car earlier that night.

Victor pulled out his pocket knife, jammed it into the side seal of the briefcase’s false bottom, and popped the metal lining open.

Inside lay a small, velvet-lined compartment containing a vintage silver pocket watch—his father’s watch, ticking steadily in the quiet room.

Tucked beneath the watch was a fresh, gloss-finish color photograph, dated yesterday in Zurich, Switzerland.

Victor lifted the photo under the lamp light.

His heart stopped.

The photograph showed a tall nine-year-old boy with dark hair and striking grey eyes—a boy who looked identical to Victor when he was a child. The boy was sitting on a bench outside a Swiss private academy, holding a leather tactical notebook.

Standing right behind the boy, with his hand resting proudly on the young boy's shoulder, was a man in a black coat whose face was turned away from the camera.

Victor turned the photograph over with cold, steady fingers.

Written on the back in fresh gold ink was a short, handwritten message in Clara’s unmistakable script:

May you like

You saved Ellie and Mia, Victor. But you left your true son behind in Zurich nine years ago. And his father is coming to take New York.

Victor stared at the gold writing on the back of the photo, his pulse hammering against his ribs, as the silver pocket watch on his desk continued to tick loudly in the dark.
