Chapter 6 - deeper roots

Victor stood frozen near the warehouse door, the cold rain splashing against his boots as Marcus's recorded words repeated in his head.

Clara’s real biological child is currently living in his own house under a different name.

"Boss?" Marco walked up beside him, holding an umbrella. "The perimeter is clear. We should return to the mansion."

"Celeste," Victor said, turning around slowly.

Celeste flinched, backing away slightly. "Yes, Victor?"

"When Clara died eight years ago," Victor said, his eyes scanning her face, "who moved into the guest house on the north side of the estate?"

Celeste swallowed hard, her eyes darting away. "Nobody... just... just the new housekeeper, Hannah, and her young daughter."

Victor’s heart hammered against his ribs. Hannah had been hired as a private nurse for Clara during her final illness, eight years ago. She had brought her newborn daughter, Mia, to live in the guest house shortly after Clara passed away.

"Get in the car," Victor commanded coldly.

Twenty minutes later, the convoy pulled into the estate. Victor didn't wait for his men. He marched straight past the main hall, through the stone courtyard, and toward the isolated wooden guest house on the north edge of the property.

He kicked the front door open.

The small living room was quiet. Sitting at a small wooden dining table was eight-year-old Mia, doing her homework under a warm lamp. Beside her stood Hannah, the middle-aged housekeeper, who gasped and dropped a porcelain tea saucer to the floor, shattering it into pieces.

"Don Victor!" Hannah stammered, backing away against the counter. "What... what's wrong?"

Victor stepped into the room, his eyes moving between Hannah and young Mia.

Mia had bright blue eyes and dark wavy hair—the exact physical features of Clara Moretti.

Victor pulled the singed document from his pocket and laid it on the table in front of Hannah. "Explain this, Hannah. Explain why Dr. Vance wrote that Clara's real baby was taken from the room at 2:14 AM."

Hannah covered her mouth with both hands, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Oh God... Vance told you..."

"Mom?" Mia asked softly, looking up from her book with wide, innocent eyes. "What's going on?"

"Hannah, talk to me now!" Victor demanded, his voice echoing in the small cabin.

"I didn't steal her, Don Victor! I swear on my life!" Hannah sobbed, dropping to her knees. "Clara begged me to do it! The night she gave birth, she realized someone in your own family was trying to poison the baby! She made Dr. Vance swap the babies at birth to protect her real daughter!"

Victor felt the world tilt beneath his feet. "If Mia is Clara's daughter... then who is Ellie?"

Hannah looked up, her face filled with horror. "Ellie... Ellie is the daughter of Don Sal Moretti."
