Chapter 6 - The Leather Folder
As Luca stood up, still holding Nora securely against his chest, his eyes caught sight of a sleek leather staff folder resting on the folding counter near the door.
He stepped over and flipped the folder open with one hand.
Inside sat an official termination notice printed on estate letterhead. It was addressed to Emily Carter, dated for seven o'clock the next morning, citing "inadequate physical performance and failure to maintain estate standards." At the bottom of the page was the sharp, arrogant signature of Harland Pierce, the estate manager.
Nora raised a tiny finger and pointed toward the far end of the hallway.
"That’s the paper he told Mommy not to show you," Nora said softly.
Luca looked up from the page.

His face was completely pale.
