Chương 3 - the house on lake shore drive

The Blackwood Manor on Lake Shore Drive was a majestic limestone estate overlooking the cold, dark waters of Lake Michigan. Surrounded by high iron gates and guarded by private security, it had served as the seat of the Blackwood family power for three generations.

Inside the grand second-floor guest suite, Claire tucked Noah into a large, plush four-poster bed. The little boy’s white sneakers sat neatly beside the nightstand, his blue suit jacket draped over a chair.

"Mommy?" Noah whispered, his brown eyes drowsy as he clutched his stuffed bear. "Is the angry man in the gray suit really going to make us leave?"

Claire sat on the edge of the mattress, gently stroking her son's soft hair. Her face was calm, though her heart pounded against her ribs. "No, baby. Grandpa Richard promised us we are safe here. Nobody is going to make us leave."

"He looked like me," Noah murmured, his eyelids fluttering shut. "In the mirror at the restaurant... he had the same dark eyes."

Claire’s breath hitched. She kissed her son's forehead, waiting until his breathing turned slow and rhythmic before standing up and quietly stepping out into the dimly lit hallway.

Standing at the top of the marble staircase, staring out through the two-story arched window at the lake below, was Ethan.

He had removed his suit jacket and black tie, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his dark hair disheveled. He held a glass of dark scotch in his hand, looking like a man haunted by ghosts.

Claire paused, her low heels making a soft sound against the parquet floor. She prepared to turn back toward her room, but Ethan spoke without turning around.

"How old is he, Claire?" his deep, raspy voice echoed through the empty hallway.

Claire stopped. She stood her ground, her posture straight, her chestnut hair falling over her shoulders. "He's six, Ethan. You know how old he is."

Ethan slowly turned around, setting his glass on a marble pedestal. His dark eyes were intense, bloodshot, and filled with a dangerous mix of fury and pain. "Six years ago, you walked out of my life without a word. You packed your bags while I was in London on a business trip, left your security keycard on my desk, and vanished off the grid."

"I left because I had no choice!" Claire countered, her voice dropping into a fierce whisper to avoid waking Noah.

"You had every choice!" Ethan stepped closer, his broad frame towering over her in the dim light. "I was going to propose to you, Claire! I had the ring in my pocket! And instead, I come home to an empty apartment and a note saying you didn't love me anymore!"

Claire let out a bitter, heartbroken laugh. "A note? Is that what she told you?"

Ethan froze, his eyes narrowing. "What are you talking about?"

Before Claire could answer, the grand front doors on the ground floor slammed open, the sound echoing up the curved staircase like a gunshot.
