Chương 8 - the park in autumn

By 5:30 PM, the crisp autumn sun began to set over Millennium Park, casting golden light across the orange and red leaves of the maple trees.
Claire sat on a wooden park bench near the fountain, wearing a warm cream trench coat over her dress, watching Noah run across the grass with a red kite string in his small hands.
Footsteps rustled softly on the fallen leaves behind her.
Ethan walked up to the bench, dressed in his dark navy suit without his tie, carrying two cups of hot coffee from a local cafe. He handed one cup to Claire, taking a seat beside her on the bench.
"Arthur Hale resigned from the board an hour ago," Ethan said softly, looking out at his son playing in the grass. "He and Victoria are leaving for London tomorrow morning."
Claire took a slow sip of her coffee, the warm steam rising into the cool evening air. "Is it really over, Ethan?"
Ethan set his coffee down, turning his body to face her. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently covering her fair fingers.
"The lies are over, Claire," Ethan murmured, his dark eyes filled with a raw, vulnerable intensity she hadn't seen since they were twenty-five. "I wasted six years hating you... six years when I should have been holding my son and protecting the woman I love."
Claire looked down at their joined hands, her heart aching with years of unspoken longing. "Ethan... we're not the same people we were six years ago. You built an empire, and I built a quiet life for Noah."
"Then let us build a new life together," Ethan said softly, his thumb gently stroking her knuckles. "I don't care about the empire, Claire. I care about you. Give me a chance to be the father Noah deserves... and the man you can trust again."
Claire looked up into his eyes, seeing the genuine, unshakeable devotion shining in his dark gaze.
Out on the lawn, Noah caught the wind, his red kite soaring high into the clear blue sky. "Mommy! Dad! Look how high it goes!" the little boy cheered, waving his hand happily.

Ethan smiled—a bright, beautiful, genuine smile that lit up his handsome face—and waved back to his son.
Claire felt a deep, radiant warmth spread through her chest, realizing that the dark shadow that had hung over their lives for six years had finally lifted.
