Chương 9 - the father's promise

Three months later, the Blackwood Manor on Lake Shore Drive was filled with the warm, cheerful light of a winter evening. High Christmas trees draped in gold ribbons and twinkling lights stood in the grand foyer, while a fire crackled merrily in the stone hearth of the main living room.
Richard Blackwood sat in a comfortable leather armchair near the fire, reading a bedtime story to six-year-old Noah, who sat in his lap wearing green flannel pajamas, completely absorbed in the book.
Standing near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the snowy lake were Ethan and Claire.
Claire wore an elegant dark green velvet dress, her long chestnut hair flowing loosely over her shoulders, her fair skin radiant in the warm firelight. Standing beside her was Ethan, dressed in a simple black sweater and dark trousers, his arm wrapped securely around her waist.
Ethan reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box lined with black silk. He opened the lid.
Inside rested a breathtaking three-carat oval diamond ring, sparkling brilliantly under the warm lights.
Claire’s breath caught in her throat. She looked from the ring up into Ethan's intense, loving dark eyes.
"This isn't the ring I bought six years ago, Claire," Ethan whispered softly, his deep voice thick with emotion. "That ring belonged to a boy who didn't know how to protect you. This ring belongs to a man who will spend every single day of his life making sure you and Noah are safe, loved, and honored."
Ethan took the ring from the box, gently slipping it onto her left ring finger. It fitted perfectly.
Claire smiled through tears of pure happiness, leaning up to kiss him—a deep, sweet, passionate kiss that sealed six years of pain into a promise of forever.
"I love you, Ethan," Claire murmured against his lips.
"I love you, Claire," Ethan whispered back, pulling her close against his chest as the fire crackled warmly in the background.

Noah looked up from his book, seeing his parents hugging near the window, and let out a happy giggle. "Grandpa Richard, look! Dad is kissing Mommy!"
Richard let out a rich, warm laugh, patting his grandson's head. "That's what men do when they're lucky enough to find the right woman, Noah."
