Chapter 1 - the suitcase collapse

The grand foyer of the Moretti estate was an overwhelming display of ancient wealth and dark power. Soaring marble archways stretched toward vaulted ceilings, where massive crystal chandeliers cast warm, golden light across hand-carved mahogany panels and polished stone floors. Standing near the center of the vast entrance hall was Luca Moretti. Exceptionally tall, massively built, and broad-shouldered, Luca possessed an intimidating physical presence that made most men back away in instinctual fear. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit over an open-collar black dress shirt, a luxury wristwatch gleaming on his wrist above polished leather shoes. Dark hair framed a ruggedly handsome face marked by light stubble and a guarded, distant expression—a armor built over years of being treated like a dangerous brute.
Beside him stood his elder sister, Elena Moretti, effortlessly elegant in a luxurious champagne-colored dress with sparkling diamond earrings, her blonde hair styled into a flawless updo. Opposite them stood Marco Bellini, Luca’s trusted lieutenant, sharp and disciplined in a tailored black suit, white dress shirt, and dark tie.
The heavy oak front doors swung open, and Sophia Bennett stepped into the foyer.
Petite, warmhearted, and absurdly out of place in the criminal underworld, Sophia looked like a vision from a vintage romantic film. Long brown hair flowed over her shoulders, held neatly back by a delicate white ribbon. She wore an elegant pale-yellow vintage-inspired dress adorned with subtle ruffles, paired with simple flat shoes. In her hand, she dragged a worn leather suitcase.
As she took three eager steps toward the center of the room, the front wheel of her suitcase caught the thick fringe of an imported Persian rug.
Sophia gasped as her balance vanished entirely. She stumbled forward, arms flailing, hurtling straight across the polished floor directly toward the towering figure of Luca Moretti.
Instinctively, Sophia reached out with both hands, clutching tightly onto the front lapels of Luca's black dress shirt to brace herself. Luca didn't move an inch. With lightning fast grace, his large, calloused hand reached out and caught her firmly by the arm, effortlessly lifting her back up onto her feet as if she weighed no more than a feather.
Marco’s hand hovered near his jacket lining, while Elena raised a manicured eyebrow in sheer disbelief at the sheer absurdity of the entrance.
Sophia straightened her pale-yellow dress, her rosy cheeks flushing bright red, though her bright brown eyes sparkled with playful humor. She looked up into Luca's intense, guarded face.
"Sorry," Sophia offered with a timid chuckle. "I fall down a lot."
Luca looked down at the petite woman standing practically against his chest. His guarded blue eyes searched her face, waiting for the familiar recoil, the trembling knees, or the disgusted glare he usually received from outsiders because of his massive size and terrifying reputation. But Sophia didn't step back. She remained right where she was, looking back at him with genuine, fearless warmth.
Luca’s brow furrowed in genuine confusion. "You’re not going to comment on me?"
Sophia smiled slightly, smoothing down the front of her ruffled skirt, before extending a soft, delicate hand toward him. Luca hesitated for a long second, his large hand trembling slightly before he slowly reached out and enveloped her tiny hand in his.
"I’m Sophia Bennett," she introduced herself gently. "I make wedding cakes and apparently attack people with suitcases."
A faint spark of amused surprise flickered behind Luca's guarded eyes, though his jaw remained set in a firm line.
Marco stepped forward, breaking the silent spell that had fallen over the foyer. He adjusted his dark tie, his voice professional and calm. "The priest wants to know if the ceremony is still tonight."
Luca looked down at Sophia, his expression softening just a fraction, as if expecting her to use the priest's mention as an excuse to run for the doors.
Before Sophia could open her mouth to reply, Elena stepped smoothly between them. With a gentle yet firm motion, Elena grasped Sophia’s arm and pulled her two paces away toward the shadow of a marble pillar, making sure Luca and Marco were out of earshot.

Elena leaned in close to the young baker, her dark eyes intense, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper.
"Your father never owed Luca any debt."
