Chapter 2 - shadow of the chapel

Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. The golden light of the foyer suddenly felt blinding, the air thick and suffocating. She stared at Elena, her mind racing to process the words that had just been whispered into her ear.

"What do you mean?" Sophia managed to whisper back, her small hands clutching her pale-yellow dress. "My father told me... he said he signed a debt agreement with the Moretti syndicate five years ago. He said if I didn't marry Luca, they would take our bakery and put him in prison."

Elena’s expression didn't soften, but there was a flicker of quiet pity in her dark eyes. "My brother is a powerful man, Sophia. He is feared across three states. But Luca has never forced an innocent family into a forced marriage contract over a gambling debt. That isn't how he operates. Whatever story Arthur Bennett sold you, it was a lie."

Before Sophia could ask another question, Luca’s deep, rumbling voice echoed across the marble floor.

"Is there a problem, Elena?"

Elena turned smoothly, her champagne dress gliding across the floor as her sophisticated mask locked back into place. "Not at all, brother. I was simply making sure your bride was comfortable before we proceed to the sanctuary."

Luca walked over, his massive frame casting a long, protective shadow over Sophia. He looked down at her pale face, noticing the subtle tremor in her hands. A shadow of self-doubt crossed his rugged features—he assumed her fear was caused by his presence.

"If you want to leave, Sophia," Luca said softly, his voice low and unexpectedly gentle, "you can walk out those front doors right now. I will not stop you."

Sophia looked from Luca’s guarded, honest eyes to Elena’s silent, watchful gaze. If her father had lied about the debt, why was she here? Why had Arthur Bennett practically begged her to pack her bags and move into the Moretti estate overnight? Looking up at the giant man before her, Sophia saw no monster. She saw a man who expected the world to hate him, yet was offering her complete freedom.

"I'm not leaving," Sophia said clearly, offering him a small, reassuring smile. "I promised a wedding, Mr. Moretti. And I don't break promises."

Ten minutes later, they stood inside the estate's private stone chapel. Candlelight flickered against ancient stained-glass windows, casting deep reds and golds over the altar. The ceremony was brief and solemn. With Marco standing as witness and the old family priest reading the traditional vows, Luca slipped a heavy platinum band onto Sophia's delicate ring finger.

As the priest declared them husband and wife, Luca leaned down, gently placing a soft, respectful kiss against Sophia's cheek, careful not to overwhelm her with his size.

Yet as they stepped out of the chapel back into the main residence, Marco approached with a solemn expression, holding a velvet-lined silver tray. On it rested a small, elegant white bakery box tied with a red ribbon—delivered directly to the estate gate just moments ago.
