Chapter 10 - the threshold of sixteen

A week later, the morning sun rose over the Moretti estate in brilliant shades of gold and pink.
The threat of Victor Bellandi had been completely dismantled by Marco and Luca's forces, the stolen trust restored, and Arthur Bennett placed under permanent estate protection where he could bake in safety.
In the warm, sunlit kitchen of the estate, Sophia stood at the granite island. She wore a fresh pale-yellow vintage dress with a white ribbon in her dark hair. Beside her stood Luca. He had discarded his suit jacket, wearing his black shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his massive hands carefully helping her spread white vanilla frosting over a towering three-tiered birthday cake.
Sophia giggled as Luca accidentally got a smear of white frosting on his rugged, stubbled cheek.
"Hold still, Mr. Boss," Sophia teased, reaching up on her tiptoes to wipe the frosting off with her thumb, then licking it off with a sweet smile.
Luca looked down at his petite, beautiful wife, his large arms wrapping gently around her waist, pulling her close against his broad chest. "You really are fearless, aren't you?"
"Only because I have the biggest, bravest bodyguard in the world," Sophia murmured, leaning up to kiss his lips softly.
Luca held her tight, his heart fuller than it had ever been in his life. The guarded, lonely man who thought he was destined to be feared had found love in the arms of a clumsy baker with a yellow dress and a fearless heart.
A soft knock at the kitchen door interrupted their moment. Marco stepped inside, holding an old, heavy wooden chest bound with sixteen rusted iron bands.
"Boss," Marco said quietly, setting the heavy chest onto the corner table. "This was just delivered from the central vault in Rome. It was left by your father sixteen years ago, with instructions to open it on Sophia's twenty-fourth birthday."
Sophia and Luca walked over to the chest. On top of the iron lock sat a heavy brass key stamped with the number sixteen.
May you like
Sophia looked up at Luca, her hand resting over his on the brass key.
As they turned the key together, the rusty iron lock popped open with a heavy mechanical click, revealing an ancient leather-bound book and a sealed letter marked with a crest none of them had ever seen before...
