Chapter 2 - the secret ring

The silence that fell over the VIP room was so absolute that the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor sounded like thunder.
Dr. Harris dropped his medical chart, his eyes wide behind his wire-rimmed glasses as he stared at the glowing telemetry screen. "This is impossible... His vital signs are stabilizing. His heart rhythm is perfectly normal."
Marco Romano stepped into the room, his heavy boots clicking sharply against the linoleum floor. His disciplined, intimidating presence instantly pushed the medical staff back toward the door.
"Out," Marco commanded flatly, his dark eyes fixed on Catherine and her small son. "Everyone except the doctor out. Lock the floor."
The trauma team scrambled out of the room, leaving only Dr. Harris, Marco, Catherine, and little Logan standing around the bed.
Catherine rushed forward, her hands trembling violently as she gathered Logan into her arms. She held her son tight against her pale-green uniform, her heart pounding like a trapped bird against her ribs. Logan wrapped his small arms around her neck, holding Captain Bear loosely in one hand.
"How do you have that ring?" Catherine demanded, her voice shaking with a mixture of grief, fear, and desperate anger. She stared at the gold band resting in Alessandro’s broad, calloused palm. "Where did you get my husband's ring?"
Alessandro shifted slightly against his pillows. Despite his exhaustion and the pale shade of his fair skin, his dark eyes burned with incredible intensity.
"Your husband gave it to me himself, Catherine," Alessandro said, his deep voice smooth and controlled. "Three hours before his car was pushed off the bridge into the harbor five years ago."
Catherine felt the floor tilt beneath her feet. "No... David was an accountant for an insurance firm. He had nothing to do with you! He died in a tragic accident!"
"David wasn't an accountant, Mrs. Winters," Marco spoke up quietly from the foot of the bed, his tone unusually gentle for a man who looked like he could break steel with his bare hands. "David was an undercover federal auditor assigned to investigate our syndicate's regional accounts."
Catherine stared at Marco, then back at Alessandro, her world shattering into a thousand surreal pieces. "Undercover? You're lying. All of you are lying!"
"If I wanted to lie to you, Catherine," Alessandro said low, his gaze never leaving her face, "I wouldn't be holding the ring he swore I should only give to you if his son was ever in danger."
Alessandro looked down at little Logan, who was looking at the mob boss with wide, curious eyes.
Dr. Harris stepped closer to the bedside computer, typing rapidly on the keyboard as he examined Alessandro’s medication logs. Suddenly, the doctor's face went rigid.
"Alessandro," Dr. Harris whispered, his voice laced with cold dread. "Look at the IV line setup from twenty minutes ago."
Marco instantly stepped up, examining the clear plastic tube running into Alessandro’s arm. A small, milky residue sat trapped near the secondary valve.
"Potassium chloride," Dr. Harris said, turning to Marco. "Someone substituted his saline bag while the shift changed. That's why his heart stopped. Someone on this staff tried to murder him tonight."

Dominic’s dark eyes narrowed into lethal slits. "And the only reason I survived... was because that little boy climbed onto my chest and knocked the secondary line loose when he set his bear down."
Alessandro looked up at Catherine, his dark eyes locking onto hers with terrifying protectiveness. "Your son didn't just warm my chest, Catherine. He saved my life. And now, the people who tried to kill me know your face."
