Chapter 9 - the truth behind the crash

By three in the morning, the heavy thunderstorm had cleared, leaving a crisp, cool wind blowing across the cliffs.

Down in the subterranean safe room, the heavy steel doors opened smoothly. Alessandro stepped inside, his dark coat removed, his white dress shirt sleeves rolled up to his tattooed forearms.

Catherine stood up from a velvet sofa, holding a sleeping Logan in her arms. When she saw Alessandro standing unharmed in the doorway, a wave of profound, overwhelming relief rushed through her chest.

She set Logan gently down on the couch and walked directly over to Alessandro, throwing her arms around his waist, burying her face against his chest.

Alessandro froze for a fraction of a second in surprise before his broad, warm arms wrapped around her tightly, holding her close against his broad frame.

"It's over, Catherine," Alessandro whispered into her soft brown hair. "The perimeter is secure."

Catherine pulled back slightly, looking up at his ruggedly handsome face. "Did you find out who 'The Architect' is?"

Alessandro nodded slowly, his expression serious. "It was Arthur Vance—the head of the rival Vance Syndicate. He was using a double agent inside the federal task force to frame David, while using his own men to infiltrate my council."

"And David?" Catherine asked, her voice trembling. "Is he... is he really gone?"

Alessandro took a deep breath, reaching into his pocket. He pulled out a small silver satellite phone and handed it to her.

"I received a secure signal two hours ago from a federal safe house in Maine," Alessandro revealed. "David was rescued by a loyal government team three days ago. He is safe, Catherine."

Catherine stared at the phone, tears welling in her eyes. "He's alive..."

"He wants to speak to you," Alessandro said softly, his voice carrying a strange, noble sense of sacrifice. He stepped back, giving her privacy as she pressed the phone to her ear.

The line clicked.

"Catherine?" David's voice came through the speaker, warm, familiar, but filled with a heavy, bittersweet peace. "It's me."

Catherine wept softly into the receiver. "David... oh God, David..."

"Listen to me, Catherine," David spoke gently. "I know everything that happened tonight. I know Alessandro saved you and Logan. I know he protected my son when I couldn't."

David paused, taking a ragged breath.

"The man I was five years ago died on that bridge, Catherine," David confessed softly. "I have to stay in witness protection permanently to keep the remaining corruption buried. But I know who holds your heart now... and I know who will keep my son safe."

Catherine looked up from the phone, her tear-filled eyes meeting Alessandro’s dark, intense gaze standing ten feet away across the safe room.

"Be happy, Catherine," David whispered smoothly. "You and Logan deserve the world."

The line went dead.
