Chapter 3 - The Cipher in the Cart

Vincent released his grip on Michael's collar, letting his former friend fall heavily back into his chair as two armed guards pinned Michael's arms behind his back.
Vincent walked out into the corridor toward Elena’s cleaning cart.
He moved the stacks of fresh linen and spray bottles aside, reaching into the bottom canvas storage bin. His large, tattooed hand pulled out a heavy, sealed black steel lockbox.
Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth in pure shock. "Mr. Caruso... I swear on my life, I have never seen that box before! Someone put it in my cart while I was wiping down the glass walls!"
Vincent didn't yell. He held the black steel box in his palm, feeling its weight. He turned to Marcus.
"Take the captains to the sub-level holding rooms," Vincent ordered quietly. "Keep Michael in solitary custody under direct guard. Nobody speaks to him until I give the word."
"Understood, Boss," Marcus nodded, gesturing for his guards to escort the weeping, protesting captains out of the penthouse.
Once the office was cleared, Vincent turned to Elena and little Noah. He gestured toward his plush leather armchairs near the fireplace.
"Sit down, Elena," Vincent said softly.
Elena hesitated, then sat on the edge of the velvet armchair, holding Noah securely in her lap. The three-year-old boy rested his head against her shoulder, his messy brown curls soft against her neck, holding his stuffed rabbit tightly.
Vincent walked behind his desk, retrieved a small tactical blade from his drawer, and sliced through the brass latch of the black steel box.
He lifted the lid.
Inside rested a stack of high-frequency audio files, a forged non-disclosure agreement, and a thick, yellowed envelope bearing an official, vintage notary stamp.
Vincent opened the yellowed envelope and pulled out the legal document inside.
As his piercing blue eyes scanned the black calligraphy, his jaw tightened.

The document was an official biological birth record executed three years ago at Chicago Memorial Hospital.
And listed as the named father of three-year-old Noah Brooks was Vincent’s late younger brother, Gabriel Caruso.
