Chapter 5 - The Siege of Navy Pier

The midnight rain over Chicago fell in heavy sheets as three dark, armored SUVs sped down Lake Shore Drive toward Navy Pier.
Inside the lead vehicle, Vincent sat in the back seat, loading a high-caliber magazine into his sidearm. His wide-brimmed black hat was pulled low, his dark curly hair resting against his collar, his tattoos visible along his broad forearms.
Beside him, Marcus reviewed the tactical layout of the commercial dock on an encrypted tablet screen.
"Michael Russo wasn't just working for federal prosecutors, Boss," Marcus reported, his tone cold. "He was selling our European shipping routes to Victor Vance. Vance offered Michael fifty percent of the Caruso trust once you were out of the picture."
"Vance won't touch a single dollar of my brother's legacy," Vincent said softly.
When the three SUVs screeched to a halt outside Pier 22, Marcus’s tactical team moved with swift, lethal discipline. They breached the corrugated metal gates of the private shipping warehouse, taking defensive positions behind concrete cargo containers.
Inside the warehouse, four heavily armed Vance mercenaries were frantically loading steel travel cases onto a black speedboat docked at the water's edge. Standing near the crane controls was Victor Vance—sixty years old, wearing an expensive wool coat, holding a satellite phone.
"Vincent!" Victor shouted in panic as the heavy doors exploded inward. "Fire! Kill them!"
A brief, intense firefight erupted through the cavernous warehouse. Vincent moved through the crossfire like an unstoppable force of nature. Firing precise, controlled bursts, he took down three advancing mercenaries, his presence commanding and lethal.
Marcus cleared the left walkway, disarming Vance's lead guard with a swift, powerful strike.
Victor Vance dropped his satellite phone and scrambled toward the edge of the dock, trying to leap onto the idling speedboat.
Vincent closed the distance in three long strides, reaching out with his massive hand to grab Vance by his wool coat collar, slamming him violently against the iron frame of the cargo crane.
The satellite phone clattered onto the wet wooden planks, sliding into the dark lake water below.
Vance gasped for air, his hands clawing at Vincent’s iron grip as he stared into the terrifying, icy blue eyes of the Chicago crime lord.
"Vincent... please!" Vance choked out, tears of terror mixing with the rain on his face. "It was Michael's idea! Michael brought me the bugging devices!"
"You tried to murder my brother's son," Vincent growled, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that echoed across the water.
Vincent tightened his grip, signaling two federal marshals who stepped out from behind Marcus’s team with raised handcuffs.
"Take him," Vincent ordered coldly. "Ensure every offshore account Vance operated is seized by federal prosecutors before sunrise."

As Vance was forcefully dragged away in heavy steel handcuffs, screaming threats that dissolved into the rain, Vincent stood on the edge of the pier, looking out over the dark, rolling waves of Lake Michigan.
The long nightmare that had haunted his brother's memory was finally coming to an end.
