Chapter 4 - The Brother's Legacy

The fireplace crackled softly in the quiet executive office, casting long shadows across the dark mahogany paneling.

Vincent stood motionless behind his desk, holding the yellowed birth certificate in his hands. His broad chest rose and fell heavily as he absorbed the shock of the revelation.

Three years ago, his younger brother Gabriel had died in a tragic boating accident on Lake Michigan. For three years, Vincent had believed Gabriel left no family behind.

He looked across the room at three-year-old Noah. The messy dark-brown curls, the expressive eyes, and the serious, guarded posture—Noah was the living image of Gabriel as a child.

Vincent walked slowly across the plush carpet and knelt in front of Elena's chair.

"Why didn't you tell me, Elena?" Vincent asked softly, his deep baritone filled with raw, overwhelming emotion. "Why did you hide my brother's son in my own building as a housekeeper's child?"

Tears spilled over Elena’s lashes, splashing onto her white apron.

"Because Gabriel told me to hide, Vincent," Elena whispered, her voice trembling. "Three days before he died, Gabriel came to my apartment. He handed me a folder and told me that someone in your inner circle was trying to destroy the Caruso bloodline to steal the family trust."

Vincent’s blue eyes narrowed into cold stone. "Michael Russo."

"Gabriel told me that if anyone found out I was pregnant with his child, they would make sure the baby was never born," Elena sobbed quietly. "I took a job as a night cleaner under my mother's maiden name so I could earn money for Noah's medicine without your board members finding out who he was."

Vincent reached out with a large, warm hand, gently touching three-year-old Noah’s cheek. The little boy leaned into his palm, looking into his uncle's piercing blue eyes with quiet, fearless trust.

"My brother gave his life to protect you, Elena," Vincent said softly. "And you protected his son."

He stood up to his full height, looking down at her with absolute, protective devotion.

"You don't wear an apron in this building anymore, Elena," Vincent declared. "You and Noah are coming to live at my private Gold Coast estate tonight."

Before Elena could reply, Marcus stepped quickly into the office, his earpiece crackling with urgent static.

"Boss," Marcus reported grimly. "We just intercepted a high-frequency signal transmitting from Michael Russo’s private vehicle in the underground garage."

Vincent turned. "Who is receiving the transmission?"

"A private corporate vessel docked at Navy Pier," Marcus revealed. "Owned by the Vance Syndicate."
