Chapter 11

The family court denied relocation.
Permanently as to the pending petition.
Not forever.
Future moves could be considered under future facts.
The judge found that the emergency evidence supporting the Arizona request had become unreliable.
Claire remained in Ohio with Brooke and Ethan.
Gary’s divorce case proceeded separately.
His criminal charges focused on conduct prosecutors could prove.
Domestic violence involving Ethan.
Child endangerment.
Conduct involving Brooke during the confrontation.
False statements and evidence-related offenses connected to specific staged threat incidents where proof was sufficient.
The state did not charge every suspicious event as Gary’s fabrication.
The first anonymous photograph remained unresolved.
The suspicious SUV was innocent.
The dead bird was probably coincidence.
That distinction mattered.
Gary had exploited a world where some danger might genuinely exist.
The court was not required to pretend Dominic’s life became safe just because Gary lied.
Child services continued monitoring Claire.
She hated it.
Then admitted she needed it.
A caseworker asked:
“What do you believe you missed?”
Claire answered:
“I believed explanations because the alternative meant admitting I married another dangerous man after leaving one.”
The caseworker did not soften the question.
“And your son?”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“He paid for that denial.”
Brooke remained furious with her mother longer than Ethan did.
Ethan wanted normal faster.
Children sometimes did.
He asked whether Gary would come home.
“No,” Claire said.
“Ever?”
“No.”
That was one answer she could give clearly.
Then he asked about Dominic.
“Can Dad stay here?”
Claire paused.
Dominic’s criminal history still mattered.
“No. But you can keep seeing him through the plan.”
Ethan frowned.
“Gary was bad and Dad can’t live here either?”
Claire sat beside him.
“Different reasons.”
“That’s stupid.”
“Yes.”
He looked surprised.
Claire almost smiled.
“Some adult problems are stupid and still real.”
Meanwhile, Dominic voluntarily met with Ethan’s therapist.
The therapist asked:
“What does Ethan think you do?”
Dominic answered:
“He knows I own businesses.”
“That is not what I asked.”
Dominic stayed quiet.
The therapist continued:
“He has heard the word Mafia.”
“Yes.”
“He has heard people are afraid of you.”
“Yes.”
“He now knows Gary used fear of your world to manipulate his mother.”
Dominic looked toward the floor.
“Yes.”
May you like
“So what are you going to do with that?”
For once, Dominic had no immediate answer.
