Chapter 13

Gary entered negotiated pleas after the forensic evidence and Ethan’s interview survived defense challenges.
He admitted domestic violence and child-endangerment conduct involving Ethan.
He admitted specific false evidence and filing-related offenses connected to the green fence incident and relocation materials.
More expansive theories about every threat were dismissed.
His lawyers argued he believed relocation was genuinely safer for the family.
That may have been partly true.
He had seen Dominic’s criminal history.
He knew Claire once feared Dominic’s world.
But wanting a safer life did not authorize manufacturing evidence or beating a child into supporting it.
Gary received a custodial sentence followed by supervised release.
Mandatory domestic-violence intervention.
Financial penalties.
And no contact with Ethan or Brooke.
His relationship with Claire ended permanently through divorce.
The Phoenix partnership terminated his agreement.
He lost the $62,000 contribution after litigation over the contract terms.
He did not become penniless.
He did not become a comic-book villain.
He became a man who wanted control badly enough to turn legitimate fear into manufactured proof.
Claire’s child-welfare case remained open longer.
She completed counseling.
Parenting work.
Safety planning.
Unannounced visits.
The agency eventually closed the case with the children remaining in her care.
The closure letter did not say she had done everything right.
It said the current home was safe and protective capacity had improved.
Claire framed nothing.
She stored the letter.
Dominic’s separate federal problems continued.
Months later, he entered a negotiated plea in a racketeering case unrelated to Gary.
The sentence was substantial but less than prosecutors originally sought.
Brooke attended none of the hearings.
Ethan asked only one question:
“Is Dad going away?”
Claire answered:
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Years.”
Ethan cried.
Dominic did too when Claire told him later.
He arranged his legitimate assets so child support and education payments would continue through independent professionals rather than criminal associates.
He gave up control of several lawful businesses as part of broader restructuring and legal obligations.
No Mafia immunity.
No magical protection because he had rescued his children.

The man who came through the front door like a legend still had to enter prison like everyone else convicted under federal law.
That mattered to Brooke.
