Chapter 10 - The choice of the heart

The massive cathedral was dead silent, the heavy air thick with the threat of immediate violence. Every eye was locked on Dante, the man who dared to defy the combined might of two massive syndicates.
"What is the meaning of this, Russo?" the head of the high commission demanded, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.
Dante stood tall, completely unbothered by the sheer amount of power arrayed against him. "You demand I hand over my daughter because she shares Russian blood. But the woman who brought you that information, the woman who claimed Elena kidnapped the child, is a liar."
Emma stepped forward, her heart hammering, but her voice was remarkably steady. "My sister, Clara, didn't discover Sophia’s lineage. She manipulated it. Elena never planned to hide Sophia from the Russians. Elena discovered that the Russian boss intended to use Sophia as a political sacrifice to secure a weapons trade with the cartels. Elena was trying to save the child's life."
The Russian boss’s face turned bright red. "Lies! She is a maid! You listen to a servant over the genetic documents?"
Dante pulled a small, black USB drive from his pocket. "This drive contains Elena’s final audio logs, recovered from a safe hidden in Clara’s apartment. It details every bribe Clara took from the cartels to hand Sophia over. If you take this child, you aren't returning her to her family. You are selling her to your enemies."
He tossed the drive to the head of the commission. The older man caught it, his expression darkening as he looked at Clara, who was now trembling, her confident facade entirely shattered.
"Is this true?" the commission head asked the Russian boss. The Russian hesitated, a fatal micro-expression of guilt flashing across his eyes.
The commission had strict rules against cartel involvement. Instantly, the commission’s enforcers turned their weapons away from Dante and pointed them at the Russian boss and his men. The standoff was over. The Russian syndicate had been outmaneuvered, exposed as traitors to the old laws.
"Take them," the commission head ordered. The Russian boss and Clara were dragged out of the cathedral, their screams of protest echoing into the night.
The commission head turned to Dante. "You have exposed a massive betrayal, Dante. The child remains under the protection of the Russo family. Your territory is secure."
Dante nodded once, a gesture of absolute respect and quiet victory. He turned around, walking back down the long aisle. He didn't look at the powerful men behind him. He only looked at Emma and Sophia.
He knelt down, picking Sophia up in his strong arms. The little girl buried her face in his neck, completely exhausted but finally, truly safe. Dante reached out his other hand, entirely ignoring the watching crowd, and offered it to Emma.
She took it, feeling the immense warmth and safety of his touch.
A month later, the Manhattan restaurant was closed for a private event. Dante, Emma, and Sophia sat in the exact same secluded booth where it all began. The crystal chandeliers cast a warm glow over them. Sophia was laughing, coloring on a piece of paper, her pale-blue bow bouncing with joy. The shadows under her eyes were completely gone.
Emma wore a beautiful white dress, no longer a waitress, but the matriarch of the most powerful family in the city. Dante sat across from her, his sharp jawline relaxed, his dark eyes filled with profound, genuine love.
"You never did answer my question," Dante said softly, reaching across the table to interlock his fingers with Emma’s.
"What question?" Emma asked, a gentle smile playing on her lips.
"That first night," Dante murmured, his thumb stroking her fair skin. "I asked if you would come with us. I meant forever."
Emma looked at the terrifying mafia boss who had risked his empire for a child and a waitress. "I'm never leaving, Dante."
They leaned in, the emotional restraint entirely gone, sharing a deep, passionate kiss as Sophia giggled beside them. They had built a beautiful, unbreakable family from the ashes of betrayal.
But as they walked out of the restaurant into the cool Manhattan night, Dante’s phone vibrated in his tailored suit pocket. He pulled it out, his expression freezing. It was a secure text message from the supreme commission, bearing a gold wax seal emoji.

The Russian seat is empty, Dante. The council demands you claim the throne. See you in Rome.
Dante looked at Emma, who was holding Sophia’s hand, completely unaware. He pocketed the phone, a dangerous, cold smile touching his lips. The war for the city was over, but the war for the world had just begun.
